DH threw Louis into the mix. I think I quite like it.

Any opinions? How many do you know?

Pronounced Loo-ee or Loo-is?

I love it when pronounced Loo-is but would probably spell it Lewis.

I know of 2 - one age 15 & one age 35.

RuthlessBaggage · 20/04/2014 16:14

pn Loo-ee, dislike unless you have ties with France.

pn Loo-iss, like a little better, but would spell Lewis for clarity.

RuthlessBaggage · 20/04/2014 16:14

What was top of the list before, btw?

snoggle · 20/04/2014 16:34

My maiden name was of French origin, but a looooong way back. Loo-ee I think, as in Armstrong.

We had Caspar as top before

Much prefer Caspar tbh.

Is Louis ever pronounced Lewis?

People do, alas, pronounce Louis as loo-iss which is an annoyance.

Caspar/Casper is far better. Or Jasper?

evertonmint · 20/04/2014 16:54

Louis Smith, the gymnast, is pronounced Lewis.

IMO Louis should just be Loo-ee because that's the French spelling and pronunciation. Use Lewis if you want to use the Loo-is pronunciation. I think they are both good names - work for boys and adults.

Twighlightsparkle · 20/04/2014 16:55

I like it, defintly good spelling. I work with kids and have come across a few spelt Louis , pronounced loois. Really annoying

TravellingToad · 20/04/2014 17:02

I don't think Louis is EVER pronounced lewis?

Louis is a nice name I think

squoosh · 20/04/2014 17:05

Louis is often pronounced as Lewis. In America it would be the usual pronunciation.

I prefer Loo-ee.

jellybeans · 20/04/2014 17:24

I'm not keen to be honest, always strikes me as a bit girly or risk getting Lou for short.

snoggle · 20/04/2014 17:57

Mmmm bit polarising then :)

We know loads of Louis's, all pronounced the French way. Very common here in SW London, so no girly associations at all. We also know a few Lewises but that is always spelt Lewis.

CleverOl10 · 20/04/2014 19:20

I work at a boys school and Louis is popular pronounced both ways. It is annoying at start of term because I inevitably defer to the wrong version. Surprisingly lots of Louis's pronounced Lewis.

WhoAteAllTheCremeEggs · 20/04/2014 19:25

Lover Caspar.

PreciousPeach · 20/04/2014 21:29

Caspar is stunning....Louis less so!

Flux700 · 20/04/2014 21:30

Casper is fab.

Bowlersarm · 20/04/2014 21:31

Louis is lovely.

Caspar is.....not.

Megrim · 20/04/2014 23:00

Louis with the French pronunciation is lovely, but not everyone will get it right (even with a French surname).

snoggle · 20/04/2014 23:03

There is no consensus here is there :o

Surprised that Louis seems quite common, I don't know of a single one round here!

Louis - pn Loo-ee is lovely.

Caspar (and Jasper) are wet names.

thegirlwithnoname · 20/04/2014 23:11

I have a real problem with people mispronouncing Lewis as Lou ee and vice versa it grates my back teeth. I have an even bigger problem with people mispronouncing (or spelling) the girls name Lois! (Dd name)

alita7 · 20/04/2014 23:15

casper!! Louis is a bit little boy, I actually had a friend at school called Louis who didn't mature beyond 11 :p
