Boys names for girls

This isn't a question for my DC but just out of interest what do you think of typically boys names for girls? Eg Ryan (Sandra Bullock's character in Gravity was Ryan and it free on me), Dylan, Reese, Cameron etc. I know they're more popular in the US.. Wonder if they'll make there way over to the uk!

I'm not a huge fan. Mostly because all it says is that being female isn't good enough and that women are more likely to succeed with a male name. Also, it doesn't go both ways. Call a daughter Elliot? Do what you like, your baby! Call your son Sophie...well, can you imagine?

I think the girls having boys names is quite an old thing in the US, the daughters would be given their mothers maiden name etc.

I like Dylan for a girl

It pains me that Dylan, Bryn and Rhys (Reece Hmm) are girls names in the US. Sure, appropriate another cultures names but at least have some respect for that culture when you're doing it.

That was her surname in the film wasn't it? I think they referred to each other via surnames.

Generally I do not like Boys names for girls, they 'feel' American to me.

Not a fan of it either. My DS name is often used for females in the US but it feels weird to me. I think some names do work ok as unisex or female names (Jesse, Elliot) but others e.g. Cameron, Ryan, McKenzie just don't 'sound' right to my ears as female names!

Not sure how popular it will get here in the UK. I do know some little girls with more traditionally male names (Riley and Jamie) so maybe things are changing?

BeeKayP · 20/04/2014 14:51

Clargo55 her name was Ryan Stone

I know a couple of little girl Jamie's and a Cameron. I kind of like them... Makes a change from the very very cutesy names that have become popular! Not sure id ever be brave enough to use them but it's an interesting trend. I don't think Reese Witherspoon was christened Reese. I think it was a middle name. Same with Cameron Diaz

I know a Quinn, an Ellis and a Jaiden, but they are all in the US. I also know a Cameron. I don't mind Ellis really, but the other ones seem quite masculine to me, even for boy names, so I'm still a bit Confused about them.

Ellis was used in the middle ages (before standardised spelling) as a version of Alice, so it is a genuine unisex name (the identical male name Ellis is a version of Elias).

Actually, in the middle ages some names you wouldn't expect were used for girls: Julian, Dennis, Johan, Cecil, Lucas.
