a sibling for India

Hi all, trying to do a bit of [hopefully anonymous] sensechecking!

So DD1 is India, and sibling due pretty soon. Current choices for a girl are Freya or Marianne; if a boy Ferdia or Redmond [irish names]

Is Freya too popular? Is Marianne too dull? Is Ferdia too similar to India / too girly? Is Redmond too surname-ey? Thoughts and suggestions welcomed!

Oops!!!! My favourite Irish names are Caoimhe and Ruan! Love them!

You have exquisite taste OP. That said, I can't really love Ferdia but possibly only because I knew one that I didn't get along with. Generally though I like all the 'F' boys names: Fiachra, Phelim (though I see you've already debated it to death), Fionn.

Hugh is fabulous. DH won't let me because it's his brother's name. Meanie. I love Hughie for a little chap but agree Hugo has a posher vibe.

Redmond is good, Red not so much. (The one I know is middle aged and, well, a bit flushed about the gills.)

Other names with a vaguely similar vibe: Senan, Ronan, Rowan, Rian, Malachy.

I am very partial to Marianne too. I think it goes fine with India but you could also use Mariana as a slightly more glam alternative.

I love Freya but agree it's very popular in the UK and Ireland.

Since we seem to have similar taste, I'll offer up my DD's name: Rosa. Otherwise, Hugh and Marianne/Mariana. Job done.

I don't like Fergus much either Smile, just seemed to fit with the "Fer" idea.

Love the name Eloise - have you seen the "Eloise" books by Kay Thompson?

nyldn · 14/04/2014 13:53

maybe Marion? a bit more exotic while staying very similar. India and Marion look nice together...

BlueChampagne · 14/04/2014 14:07

How about Amber, Vashti or Topaz?

Redmond is new to me and rather cool (esp if shortened to Red)! You could also consider Wreford.

LoveVintage · 14/04/2014 14:10

My first thought was Marina too. It goes well with India, is a bit different and is a nod to Marianne, which I don't think goes.

Saffron goes well with India.
And Ferdinand is great.

HagLady · 14/04/2014 22:11

I know a Ferdia, but he's the only one I know and I'm in Ireland it's rare.

I don't think Freya or Marianne sound like India's sister. I think Miriam as suggested goes better for some reason. What about Clodagh? I like Red for a boys name too but Redmond is hard to say. Too clunky for a first name. Just Red without the MOND is a great name.

Amothersplace - Africa is a continent. India is a country.

If you are suggesting an African nation how about:

Kenya
Morocco
Djibouti
Eritrea
Chad
Sierra Leone

Ah geography gags, i've heard them all Smile. We walked into that with our eyes open, but even Florence is off limits as a result for #2...

Good logical suggestions Bonsoir, just none of them do it for me.

Adaloveslace, yep we are clearly on the same wavelength! There is a stable of pronounceable/spellable/mostly 2 syllable irish boy names that might be worth reconsideration for the bazillionth time. Senan and Fergal i like and they have no obvious weakspots for bullies, Rowan too gender neutral, too soon after boyzone for Ronan. Hugh is great, just very short..

Wreford- how unusual, quite hard to say?!

Rosa and Clodagh are within the circle of proximity unfortunately. Marion/Miriam are anathema to DP [so the pronunciation police could have a busy time of it if we go for Marianne!!].

Marina/Mariana/Marianna need a closer look.

Jemima?

Don't like Ferdia-love Ferdy though!
Hugo?

TheWhispersOfTheGods · 15/04/2014 07:49

What about Mirabel? Similar to Marianne? I like Vivienne with India too, and I think its slightly similar to Marianne? Líadan/Liadán?

For boys what about Lorcan or Tadhg, or Stefan - I love these three with India.

TheWhispersOfTheGods · 15/04/2014 08:09

Ok so the app does not like a fada! Liadan with appropriate fadas on the above. Sorry! Smile

Megrim · 15/04/2014 08:13

Madeleine?

Kira
Kendra
Keziah
Coco

Sebastian
(Sorry, can't think of many boys names!)

BlueChampagne · 15/04/2014 13:55

Wreford is pronounced Ree-ford and one of those Scottish surnames-as-first-names.
