Jane as a first name

I'm loving Jane at the moment. Do you think Jane Eyre, Jane Austen or Plain Jane Superbrain?

Also struggling with a middle name as everything sounds back to front e.g. Jane Emily should be Emily Jane, Jane Laura should be Laura Jane.

Surname is 2 syllables, begins with P. Older sister is a Sarah. We're not exactly adventurous.

Any thoughts?

Unfortunately my least favourite name in the entire world, dull as dishwater. Every one I've ever known has been the definition of a plain Jane and I just associate it with Jane Doe, i.e a nothing name. Sorry!

YouGrateMyCheese · 15/04/2014 14:36

I love Jane. Love it love it. It can sound strong yet sweet at the same time, and has oodles of history. I was watching one of the Pride and Prejudice remakes and noticed how striking the name Jane sounded - it really stood out. And hey! Jane Seymour was the most beloved of Henry VIII's wives, no small feat. Then you have Queen Lady Jane Grey, Jane Austen, Goodall, Withers, Addams, Fonda, Calamity Jane...the list goes on and on. It'll be probably be all the rage when the current crop of newborns are having their own children, with Joan and Jean along for the ride.

It is my middle name, very close to my mum's name, my great-grandmother's name and my mum liked it so much she named the dog Jane.
Hence I was a bit Jane-d out by the time I got to having children but I think I would consider it if it wasn't for the dog.

cosikitty · 15/04/2014 14:41

Jane Elizabeth sounds right.

whereisthewitch · 15/04/2014 14:44

I like it but prefer the spelling Jayne...makes it look slightly less plain!

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 15/04/2014 15:06

Love it. I have an Aunt Jane in her early 50s who is utterly fabulous.

ACatCalledColin · 15/04/2014 15:08

It's surprising how many people say Jane is a boring name when names like Emma are in the top 10.

I find Emma to be pretty boring too.

Jane just makes me think of a plain Jane.

lisej · 15/04/2014 15:47

Love it. Really unusual these days and stands out against the 'frilly' names that are popular for girls now.

RAFWife12 · 15/04/2014 18:09

I like it! Its not in my list, but thats due to DH! I think its traditional and classic, which is totally my style! I agree it needs a longer middle name to go with it to balance it out.

ShadowFall · 17/04/2014 10:17

I like Jane a lot.

minipie · 17/04/2014 10:25

Hmmm I like plain names but Jane is just a bit too plain for me, like John for a boy, just the ultimate "anonymous" names.

Janie is sweet as a nn though.

How about Jean? Still plain and simple but has a slight quirky rebellious air to it.

If you do go with Jane I agree it needs a longer middle name. Jane Elizabeth, Jane Abigail, Jane Cecilia.

alizeeod · 17/04/2014 17:03

I love it, always have!

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/04/2014 15:00

I find it incredibly dull.

But I don't like Sarah,Emma or Anna either which it fits with.

Gugglebum · 18/04/2014 18:59

I love it. If I didn't have a dull stinking one syllable surname, I would have a Jane.

tilbatilba · 18/04/2014 19:10

Jane is a lovely name, elegant & classic
Jane Victoria
Jane Alexandra
Jane Sylvia
Jane Fenella

zingally · 20/04/2014 12:27

I like it.

I've never taught a single Jane, so she'd be unique.

I only know one adult Jane, and she's in her 50s.

puddeycat · 20/04/2014 13:37

I like it but why about using other spelling Jayne and having something like
Jayne Charlotte
Jayne Alexandra
Jayne Elizabeth

tallulah · 20/04/2014 14:16

I had a boss called Jane once. She hated her name and could never understand why her father named her Jane Ann. Just how boring is that?

BackforGood · 20/04/2014 14:27

I like it too - everyone will be able to pronounce it when they see it written, most people will spell it right, yet it's not been much used in the last 30 years or so, so she'll have the bonus of being the only one Smile

bouncingbelle · 20/04/2014 14:28

Love it!

LaydeeC · 21/04/2014 18:45

Love it - my daughter's middle name. Wanted to call her Janie but hubby not keen on a 'nickname' as a first name so we settled for it as a middle name
Cannot understand at all why it is considered boring.
I think it is a strong classic name

youbethemummylion · 21/04/2014 18:50

Like it but like Janie more

Purpleroxy · 21/04/2014 19:02

Jane is nice. I'd use it.

liquidstatehasrisenagain · 22/04/2014 09:13

Oh dear. Jane and Emma are my top two names at the moment. Apparently to some they are 'boring'.

Personally I couldn't care as I have a 4 syllable surname so can hardly use Seraphina or Madeline Hmm.

Darmok · 23/04/2014 23:23

Love Jane and Janie.
