Arthur & Alfred

.... too much?

Ds is 14 months old and we're expecting another boy!

Can you have an Arthur and an Alfred?? Is it a bit ridiculous?
We're really struggling to find a name that we both like and matches our annoyingly nouny surname.

Pregnancy hormones say 'yes!!!!'
Rational mind saying 'no you daft bint'

Opinions please!

Sonlypuppyfat... the world doesn't just exist 'around here' you know.

sonlypuppyfat · 13/04/2014 15:50

Well I don't know where she lives...you know.

Puddles1234 · 13/04/2014 17:18

I love Arthur and Alfred.

What about,

Percy
Rupert
Felix
Peregrine
George
Alexander

Jellaby · 13/04/2014 17:21

So maybe a friendly 'what are the naming trends like in your area? Will these names be unusual for the school DS grow up in?' Would have sufficed?

Mrsfullhouse · 13/04/2014 21:45

Ds will be surrounded by fredericks, Ranaulphs and Wilfreds so an 'old man's' name will not be bully fodder.

There are some lovely suggestions on here, thank you... we're still working on it, but have narrowed it down to four, with nicknames etc.

Henry
Jonathan (Jonty)
Patrick
Wilbur (Will/ Bertie)

So many of the gorgeous names suggested have been used by close friends or family, so our name pool is pretty small.

Sonlypuppyfat- it's sad to think that you feel a child will be bullied for having a name that many of our grandfathers would have been proud to wear.

There was an Arthur in my class at school among the Garys Darrens and Deans maybe it's an age thing I just don't get the old man thing I don't think it's cute I think they went out of style for a reason.

Mrsfullhouse · 13/04/2014 22:35

The thing is, in my famiy and friends circle, these names have never gone out of fashion.
I was the odd one out with the on trend eighties name, surrounded by classical names- one of my first boyfriends was a Herculese!
Peregrines, Alastairs and Ruperts are the norm for me, and will be for our children. At my Ds1's first birthday, we shared cake with Arthur, Frederick, William, Wilfred, Percy and Otto, all of whom were named for an ancestor.

Yes, my Arthur may stand out in a crowd of taylor/ tyler/ caden/ bradens, but he was named for my dh's grandfather, who was the bravest man I have met.

Ds2 would be named for my beloved grandfather, but this honour has been taken by my gorgeous nephew.

Emotional/ hormonal outburst over- no offence intended.

None taken baby names are so personal I think you must come from somewhere a lot posher than me Grin

Mrsfullhouse · 13/04/2014 22:50

The ironical thing is that I don't realy like the names left in our limited selection because I see them as too modern and trendy!!!

OP posts:
Mrsfullhouse · 13/04/2014 22:51

Must just remove the posh stick up my ass and go for something like 'beiber' Grin

OP posts:
sonlypuppyfat · 13/04/2014 22:54

John is the greatest boys name ever.

Mrsfullhouse · 13/04/2014 23:02

Not Bieber??

I like Jonathan as we have a 1 syllable surname.
Dd, Dh and I had a vote earlier and Jonathan James came out tops, but I'm not going to get attached to it, as, much like tuna/ avacado and the smell of petrol, I keep falling in and out of love quite violently with things I pledge everlasting allegiance to!

My FIL was an Arthur Alfred, so the two names seem to go together just fine to me. Smile.

sonlypuppyfat · 13/04/2014 23:10

My friend has a Jonathan it's a lovely name. When I was pregnant I was obsessed by oranges and fanta I couldn't get enough of them I've not had either in the 15 years since I've had him, what I'm saying is you might have different ideas when he comes along.

BananaBeforeBed · 13/04/2014 23:12

Hi, I think the two names are a but too samey.

I don't live in rarified name circles, but will try to find a few that might fight into your circle.

Edgar
Simon
Christopher (Kit)
Torquil
Lysander
Oliver
Charles
William
Cosmo
Edmund

BananaBeforeBed · 13/04/2014 23:17

Forgot Rufus.

Mrsfullhouse · 13/04/2014 23:23

Lysander nn Sandy is my all time favourite but Dh has vetoed until he is blue in the face.
I have a few more weeks yet so this is not super urgent, but I really need to start connecting with this baby, my hormones are all over the place and struggling with this one emotionally.

Banana- nail on the head with these, but nearly all are taken or exes!

Sonly- eating oranges right now!

Might I suggest a read of some jilly Cooper books for some fab, posh names?

BananaBeforeBed · 13/04/2014 23:29

Or might you go for posh Scottish?

Angus
Hector
Farquhar
Donald
Dougal

Mrsfullhouse · 13/04/2014 23:36

Dh staunchly english... patrick on the list because we're running out of options!

Jilly cooper is the best ever for names. All my girl names were jilly through and through.

With each pregnancy, one of the first cravings I get is to read polo and riders.
