aaaagh... boys names!

Hello,

We've just found out that our third (and last!!) baby is a little boy and of course we have a million beautiful names for a girl, but are really struggling for this little chap.
Our Ds1 is 14 months old and having spent nine long months, quite recently, chosing his perfect name, every other name has been rejected at length.
We went through a phase of super posh (and yes, pretentious) names, but we've discovered that we're really quite ordinary and we would seem a bit daft calling out a name more fit for an ancient greek philosopher in our local park.

So... We've boiled it down to the following...

Henry
James
Stanley
Hugo
Spencer

Siblings are Isabella and Arthur
Surname, one syllable, begins with H.

Any favourites on the list above or similar/ not so similar additions would be most welcome.

Totally stumped on this- they're all 'ok', but I'm not in love with any of them.

Help!!

Yes, Dominic is lovely.

impatientlywaiting · 08/04/2014 12:27

When I read your OP I thought Henry sounded the nicest with your other DCs (love their names by the way) but I don't think Henry House really goes.

Agree with PPs who've suggested a longer name, shame about your brother using Sebastian. What about Rafferty, Theodore, or Matthew?

ThisIsYourSong · 08/04/2014 12:42

I think any name that can also be a surname adds to the museum connotation although that rules out most of your list - not trying to be unhelpful.

I do like the shorter names combo unlike most here! Tom for example...

ThisIsYourSong · 08/04/2014 12:51

How do you feel about Ethan / Aidan / Liam type names?

adaloveslace · 08/04/2014 13:16

As the bearer of offspring with a lovely but tricky surname, I sympathise.

How about going for something non-English to get away from the solicitors office/animal charity connotations? eg

Marco House
Lorenzo House
Matteo House

Oisin House
Cormac House
Donnacha House

Louis House
Reuben House
etc

Not necessarily any of those, but something more international might sound less Hampton Houseish. Good luck

Orangeboat · 08/04/2014 13:24

I like James the best from your list.

Mrsfullhouse · 08/04/2014 15:40

Ha ha ha... Animal charity! Love it.

Poor boy. Not sure about the foreign aspect, although I have Italian roots, Dh is staunchly English and would veto without so much of a 'how exactly do you pronounce Oisin darling?...'

He likes Freddie, George, Henry... Think English royalty I suppose, but the good ones have been taken.
He's pretty stuck on Henry, but I just find it a bit commonplace??

Poor Baby House. I love Raphael, bit Dh veto'd.

'Veto' is starting to sound like an attractive option!

I don't see what's wrong with Frederick House. Or the Ethan/Aidan/Liam combo suggested. Like someone else said-avoid single syllable names. The longer the better.

meditrina · 08/04/2014 16:02

'Baby House' is an Aussie company. Perhaps you stick with that as the name and persuade them to sponsor you? Grin

SJisontheway · 08/04/2014 16:05

I think Matthew House sounds good.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/04/2014 16:09

All great apart from Stanley and spencer. Stanley is an unattractive name IMO. Spencer? What are you thinking? And how different is it from the classy names in the list? Awful.

zipzap · 08/04/2014 16:14

I love Ptolomy - except DP vetoed it for my dc Sad Think it is great as you can go down all sorts of routes for nicknames from PT or Pete to Tol, Tolo and more (OK so Toll House probably isn't one to aim for thinking about it!)

Otherwise how about:

Toby
Noah
Seth
Jethro
Edmund
Calum

Or maybe something like Daniel John so he could be DJ in da House Grin not helpful, sorry

minipie · 08/04/2014 16:36

Henry House sounds a bit daft to me sorry. Like Henry Hoover's cousin.

George House... nah. You need something long.

Alexander or Dominic would be good. Or Frederick. Or Nathaniel maybe?

All solid conservative English names if your DH is clearly a public school boy of that ilk.

Oubliette0292 · 08/04/2014 16:42

I think all of the following sound OK with your surname: Christopher, David, Edgar, Gregory, Lawrence, Robert, Simon, Wilfred.

Or suggest the following 'English royalty' names to you DH: Leopold, Rupert, Stephen, Richard, Alexander

mummybare · 08/04/2014 16:50

Stanley is LOVELY. And James is also nice.

Mrsfullhouse · 08/04/2014 17:15

Minipie- bagged it in one! DH is classic public school rugger bugger, but I'm public school too (just a little less institutionalised) and Dc's will all be public school educated... At mother in laws insistence, therefore expense!

So yes, name has to have that swing I'm afraid.

Love Frederick, but best friends have just stolen that lovely moniker for their equally lovely three week old.

They've been best our friends for twenty years, so unlikely to be dropping out of our social strata any time soon.

I think Stanley is the best from your short list, it goes really well with your other DC names and your surname.

Stanley James House!.........perfect

GimmeDaBoobehz · 08/04/2014 18:14

I see how awkward the name can be.
My future surname sounds a bit lawyeresque with some names (think someone who isn't very old).

But here are a few that you could consider:

Isaac House
Jeremiah House
Alexander House
Matthew House (I like this and Matthew fits with all upbringins imho).
Bradley House
Charles House (Charlie for short? Just following royal theme).
Edmund House
Gregory House
Thomas House
Zachariah House

YomAsalYomBasal · 08/04/2014 18:18

Hugo!! Love that name!

Megrim · 08/04/2014 18:56

Gosh - your son is an Art House?

Mrsfullhouse · 08/04/2014 19:36

I know, but we call him Arfy and not Art (for that exact reason)

Honestly, everything just seems silly and with my hormones, I'm blowing it all out of proportion.

Dh home from work with a list of 'new' names to combat my fury at his stupid family name so...

Maximus
Gerard
Jason (??!!)

Mazimus us awesome, but it reminds me of Maxwell House... and the other two... no comment.

Of the traditional names I like Edward best with your surname

minipie · 08/04/2014 21:48

ooh Gregory is a good suggestion upthread. Unusual but still very well established, traditional, etc.

I'm married to one of 'em too Mrs Grin he currently won't consider any boys' names apart from Alexander. Which I like, but I'd quite like some other options too...

minipie · 08/04/2014 21:50

Max is too associated with Maxwell house... what about Felix? Fergus? Oliver?

Sharaluck · 08/04/2014 21:58

I really like Hugo House. I don't think it is strange, flows nicely.
