Extinct Names

I don't think some of these are so bad!

Fanny, Gertrude, Gladys, Margery, Marjorie, Muriel, Cecil, Rowland, Willie, Bertha and Blodwen are "extinct" names in the UK - meaning none have been recorded in the latest record of births.

There's a Fanni at my daughters nursery

Marcipex · 06/04/2014 21:40

Interesting. I like Rowland and Marjorie .

Frontdoorstep · 06/04/2014 21:45

There is a fanny at my daughters school too.

nkf · 06/04/2014 21:47

Well, it's easy to see why Fanny and Willie aren't popular. I could imagine some of the others returning. Roland. Without the W. I could imagine a Childe Roland.

MichaelFinnigan · 06/04/2014 21:50

Does that mean there was a Gaylord?

Which incidentally I think is an amazing name

MichaelFinnigan · 06/04/2014 21:54

Oh. My Dd's name is in there

guineapig2014 · 06/04/2014 22:00

they have bertha in our dd's class.

plannedshock · 06/04/2014 22:09

I know a little girl called Cecil-about 12ish

Foxsticks · 06/04/2014 22:22

Did anyone else read the name Bertha and burst into song?

bouncingbelle · 06/04/2014 22:39

I think Gertrude and Marjorie are nicer than lots of the names that did make the baby name list!

Giveme5minutes · 06/04/2014 23:12

I know sisters, Cecilia & Marjorie.

QueenOfThorns · 06/04/2014 23:16

You have to go right to the bottom of that article to work out what the picture of Lucy Liu is there for!

nooka · 06/04/2014 23:22

Naming trends go in cycles so if you pick a name that was at the top of it's cycle in 1905 then you might well see a fall in 2014, that's not to say it might get popular again. For a name to be 'extinct' I'd expect it to have not been used for 100 years or more. I can't imagine that names like Ann, Jane, Margaret or Mary are ever likely to disappear whereas I doubt very much that Eadwig will ever be popular again.

Innogen · 07/04/2014 06:15

Cecil is on my list.

lechers · 07/04/2014 09:32

What a non article.

So those names are less popular, but not extinct. I know children called Winifred, Jane and Dorothy. But there's not that many of them. Most of the names on that list are just not to contemporary tastes. But then again, neither are Samantha, Lisa or Sharon. I've not heard of any children called these either. So are they extinct names too...?

Surely, it's just fashion, and fashion is cyclical. These names will have their day again.

florascotia · 07/04/2014 10:29

Agree with lechers

Anyway, there are still plenty of older people around with those names. So they're not 'extinct'. They'd only be extinct if there was no-one with the names left alive on the whole planet.

smokeandglitter · 07/04/2014 16:03

I just don't like their sounds. The only one I quite like is Rowland which I also have good associations with (siblings Eleanor and Wilfred for those interested) but I loathe Margot, Marjorie, Margaret despite the pretty meaning just due to the harsh sound.

oldbutnotpastit · 07/04/2014 17:17

i think alot of the names she mentions eg dorothy and winifred are beginning to rise in popularity.I can imagine Dorothy being the new Ruby or Lily in 10 or 20 years time. there were 10 babies called Gladys in 2010 so hardly extinct .I certainly wouldn't see fred /freddie as in danger .
the truly extinct names are probably some ancient anglo-saxon type names eg
ethelred
godiva
swithin
engelbert
fridswide
gwenillian
or
mirabel ,shirley or celestine for boys

most of the names on this list could be classed as truly extinct

ChickenMe · 07/04/2014 23:24

I like Jane and Lilian. Jane was always a popular middle name anyway and in my day - born mid 70s - I did know a few Janes.

nooka · 08/04/2014 02:24

oldbutnotpastit that's a much more satisfactory list!

MrsT2007 · 08/04/2014 11:23

I've taught a Marjorie recently. Lovely girl!

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/04/2014 18:47

I know of a Dorothy who is about 10.

oldbut

That list! The Anglo-Saxon and old Welsh names on that list! Ugly doesn't quite do them justice.

Though I do think Fredmund is quite hilarious. Imagine -

"My son's nickname is Freddie"

"Short for Frederick?"

"No, no, it's short for Fredmund"

" Shock Hmm Confused "

ShadowFall · 09/04/2014 20:43

Too soon to really call any of the names in the OP extinct, some of them could easily come back into fashion again.

Although names that sound a bit rude, like Fanny or Willie, are probably more endangered than the others.

RedandChecker · 09/04/2014 20:45

ooooo I like Roland with the W ! Shock

DownstairsMixUp · 09/04/2014 20:51

I heard a baby Sharon in the shop I work the other day! I couldn't believe it! Maybe it's finally having it's come back!
