Probably THE most boring baby name question, but which do you prefer? Need to make a final decision now.

Sophie

Sophia. Because you can shorten it to Sophie. Im(completelyrandom)o, names that end in ie sound like shortened names, whereas ia sounds like a proper name.

And it is my all time favourite girls' name in the world. It works in all of the variants you've suggested. Love it!

Sophie

ShoeWhore · 05/04/2014 17:29

I think Sophia sounds stronger than Sophie.

My own name ends in ia and I much prefer it to the rather more popular ie ending.

LizLemonOut · 05/04/2014 19:26

Sofia is the Arabic spelling.

I prefer Sophia, you could nn Sophie then best of both worlds

Orangeisthenewbanana · 05/04/2014 19:48

Sophia

HRHQueenMe · 05/04/2014 20:30

Sofia, Sofie and Sofi are also the Scandinavian spellings, see the lovely Swedish Sofia on Masterchef at the moment, they are even pronouncing it correctly, So fii a.

JimmyCorkhill · 05/04/2014 20:41

Just wanted to stand up for Sofia the 1st on the Disney channel. She's NOT irritating. She maintains her friendships/kindness in a snooty royal world and is a great character. So there Smile

Sophie or Sophia are lovely btw. I would choose Sophie but only because I like the simplest version of names.

In order of preference

Sophia

Definitely Sophie.

Countrywalks · 05/04/2014 20:44

Love both but would chose Sophia . Perfect.

cityangel · 05/04/2014 20:56

you won't need to worry about blending in with any variants of this name there are 4 in our class - your daughter will be known as Soph/fi... plus last initial

Skandichick · 05/04/2014 21:04

Arrrg, it is really 50/50 isn't it! No wonder we are having a hard time to choose between them. Sofia is out for us now at least one step forward

I don't mind if Sophie is common. I think Sophia is more 'up and coming'.

Could I ask you people picture a Sophie v. A Sophia?

If I just try to get 'a feel' for the names the I think:
Sophie: bubbly, uncomplicated, 'popular', easy going
Sophia: has slightly more of 'an edge', smart, confident but not frivolous Smile

Sophia. Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria to me. Sophie is popular. Sophia is a now name.

MagratGarlik · 05/04/2014 21:15

If I picture the two names, I think of Sophie as a pretty little girl with blonde curls.

I picture Sophia as a sophisticated and elegant grown up.

What about Sophia, shortened to Sophy like 'The Grand Sophy'?

FirstTimeMom12 · 05/04/2014 21:39

I prefer Sofia or Sophia versus Sophie, love the a sound, very melodic, feminine and powerful!

Blueberrybaby · 05/04/2014 23:34

Bollocks to blending in! If you are from 'the continent' then I would be quite sad you decided against using Sofia, which would be the normal spelling in continental Europe. I think it would be nice for your DD's name to reflect her heritage and you can do that in the spelling.

But if you really want to blend in then I would go for Sophia over Sophie. Sophie is very classic English to me, whereas Sophia at least has a European feel to it even if the spelling has been anglicized.

Paddington68 · 05/04/2014 23:36

Sophie - I always think Sofia (so fear) bears as the might eat you.

ApolloniaVitelliCorleone · 05/04/2014 23:41

Sofia italian spelling all the way!!!!!

sleepingbeautiful · 06/04/2014 07:32

Sophie is nicer.
Sophia always sounds like so-fear to me.
Plus now it reminds me of that annoying Sophia Grace from Essex, who was on Ellen being super precocious. Ugh.

Delphiniumsblue · 06/04/2014 07:45

Sophie

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 06/04/2014 07:49

Lots of sophias around at the moment. I like it but think it might date to this period as one that rose in popularity and goes again.

Sophie seems more timeless but there's a few of those about too!

peggyblackett · 06/04/2014 07:51

Sophia (one of my dd2's middle names :))

EATmum · 06/04/2014 07:52

If it makes any difference there are no Sophies but three Sophia's in DD's reception class. Not saying that's usual, but maybe Sophie would be less popular?

sunnyfriday · 06/04/2014 08:02

I find sophia /sophie sound rather different from each other.
both nice - Sophia was on my short list - so there you go :-)
