I know it is only a teeny difference but anyway which do you prefer?

Very sorry but I don't like either.

Kitty?

Blueberrybaby · 05/04/2014 01:10

Harriet with Hattie for short, but since Harriet is out, then neither for me.

mathanxiety · 05/04/2014 04:38

I knew a lovely Hettie who was always Hettie. Her surname had the same short E sound in it. It went very well.

Tranquilitybaby · 05/04/2014 07:26

Hettie sounds better

peppinagiro · 05/04/2014 08:49

Neither if you're going to use them as the full name. That's like sticking 'poppet' on their birth certificate. I call my DD 'picklepig' more than her actual name, but I still don't think it would have been a good idea to register her as that.

And no, it's not just a mumsnet thing. I've been judgey about nicknames as full names since I was tiny, and have only been on mumsnet a few months :)

PreciousPeach · 05/04/2014 15:28

Well peppinagiro I think your wrong just like you think I'm wrong so neh, live and let live, each to their own etc etc [sticking out tongue emoticon]

Can I throw Etta into the mix?

smartypants1000 · 18/04/2014 23:11

Hettie! I knew the most amazing little Hettie once. I'm with you on the "not a real name" issue, OP - I've got a real "thing" about giving my children the name I'm going to call them by, as I got very upset at having to have a name that wasn't mine (I'd never been called that) read out at my wedding - so upset in fact that I changed my first name by deed poll to the name I've always been called.

squoosh · 18/04/2014 23:40

Hattie and Hettie are fine.

Harriet is really, really awful. I'd only give that name to the daughter of my mortal foe........if my mortal foe entrusted me with naming their child, which is unlikely I suppose.

FatFrumpyFilly · 19/04/2014 00:42

Hettie

MooseyMouse · 19/04/2014 05:34

Isn't Hettie an abbreviation of heterosexual; "is he a hettie?"

I adore Hattie.

eandh · 19/04/2014 06:29

Dd2 is Hattie and we have a friend whose dd is called Hettie (they are similar ages but we became friends 2 years ago and they are 7 now ) love Hattie's name (nick name is tat-tat) we get lots of lovely compliments on it, in hindsight I think we should have used Harriet on her birth certificate for when she's older but hey ho can't change it now! My Hattie is stubborn but the cheekiest, cuddliest adorable and downright stubborn 7 year old I know lo

ShesARumUn · 19/04/2014 08:37

I love both but would go with Hetty rather than Hettie.

Hattie23 · 19/04/2014 10:50

Hattie
But then i might be biased!

hubbahubster · 21/04/2014 21:09

I have gay friends who refer to straight people as 'hetty' (with their noses turned up) so would choose Hattie if I had to. I prefer another poster's suggestion of Etta though.

Breezy1985 · 21/04/2014 21:24

Hattie

Fwiw I have the shortened version of a name on my BC, its only been a problem once when the drs receptionist couldn't find me, she was searching for the 'longer' version.

Wafflenose · 22/04/2014 10:04

Hettie.

I know a Hetty (not short for anything) and it really suits her. I also know a Hettie, Hetty and Hattie (all short for Harriet, believe it or not). Not keen on Hattie.

UriGeller · 22/04/2014 10:06

Neither. Unless you're naming a Shetland pony.

maggiethemagpie · 22/04/2014 13:32

Another one who can only think of the pink hoover in the henry series when you say Hettie

Driveway · 22/04/2014 13:48

Hettie.
But I do think they're both a tiny bit... silly (?) as names without the full name.

Darmok · 22/04/2014 16:58

Hattie

Wafflenose · 23/04/2014 20:41

Agree Hetty just looks more finished. I honestly think it's fine. I called my daughter Kate and got a right old pasting on here for not putting Katherine or Kaitlyn on her birth certificate - but we weren't keen on those names! DD loves her name, and as a bonus everyone knows how to spell and pronounce it because it's simple and strong.

Pointeshoes · 24/04/2014 17:48

What about Tatiana ?

I love Hattie and I class it as a proper name.

Gimmeechocolate · 25/04/2014 11:11

I have a Hetty, not short for anything and I love it! Only ever met one other. Know several Hatties.
