Help, is it a boys or girls name?

I have worked with children for the last 20 years so I am finding choosing a boys name hard as nearly every name links to a child I know. I found the name Leighton on a boys name list, never heard it before and I like it but when I googled it I keep finding female Leightons. There is no way my DH will allow the name if he thinks its a girls name. Can anyone help?

I know a Leighton, he is most definitely a man. I have never come across it as a girl's name.

HyvaPaiva · 01/04/2014 19:15

It's a boy's name. Leighton Denny, the beauty expert, is a guy.

strawberrypenguin · 01/04/2014 19:16

I'd say boys too

GimmeDaBoobehz · 01/04/2014 19:17

It's a boys name.

It's pretty Americany sounding when you say it, I think.

Clargo55 · 01/04/2014 19:18

I know a little girl called Leighton. I think it suits a boy more though.

imnottoofussed · 01/04/2014 19:19

I would say girls name as I've only heard of actress Leighton meester with that name, she's from gossip girl

Nocturne123 · 01/04/2014 19:20

The only time I've come across it is the actress from gossip girl , Leighton meester so to me it's a girls name .

StrawberryCheese · 01/04/2014 19:21

I only know it as a surname but I'd say it sounds more masculine than feminine.

Fromhappytosad123 · 01/04/2014 19:22

My friend has a boy called Layton (spelt this way)

DebbieOfMaddox · 01/04/2014 19:27

It was a boy's name, but with Leighton Meester being the current Most Prominent Leighton I'd be wary of using it for a boy at the moment.

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/04/2014 19:29

Traditionally, it's a boys' name, but I think it's picked up popularity as a girls' name more recently, particularly in the US: I read a couple of US blogs written by women who have daughters called Leighton, possibly Gossip Girl inspired.

I can't imagine it'll really take off over here, but you can never tell.

Floralnomad · 01/04/2014 19:35

Is it welsh , years ago there was a darts player called Leighton Rees .

NewtRipley · 01/04/2014 19:43

It is one of those American style surname name names that should be for a boy but is used for girls.

NewtRipley · 01/04/2014 19:44

What about Leytonstone, that is more feminine?

HandragsNGladbags · 01/04/2014 19:45

Boy, I know a male Leighton

JonathanGirl · 01/04/2014 19:51

Hope your surname isn't Buzzard!

IMO, if a name is unisex/ever used for girls, it will probably get more and more female dominated over time, it doesn't seem to go the other way, especially with a more unusual name.

Seminyak · 01/04/2014 19:57

I know a baby Layton, boy, really like it. There is a male tennis player called Leighton something too.

Never heard it for a girl but quite like it!!

pinkandsparklytoo · 01/04/2014 20:20

The one I know of is Lleyton Hewitt, a male Aussie tennis player.

Confuseddd · 01/04/2014 20:26

Grin Newt Ripley

DebbieOfMaddox · 01/04/2014 20:26

Yes, if you love the name I'd go for Lleyton which I think is going to stay in the "boy" camp.

mrsbug · 01/04/2014 20:28

Is it pronounced lay-ton or lee-ton?

If the former then definitely a boy's name, if the latter I'm not so sure

squoosh · 01/04/2014 20:29

I was going to mention the tennis guy too. I'd assume it was a boy's name.

ChazzerChaser · 01/04/2014 20:30

Boy, Leighton Hewitt

soontobeslendergirl · 01/04/2014 23:36

I know one, male, he's a shite bag.

I still reckon it's in line to be the first text name - L8on.

Ludways · 01/04/2014 23:40

Def, boys name.
