Interested in anyone's first reaction to that name.

Sounds like medication

SnakeyMcBadass · 31/03/2014 18:31

Depends on your accent.

PiratePanda · 31/03/2014 18:33

Made up. Way too much like Darren. No.

ImAThrillseekerHoney · 31/03/2014 18:33

I thought that it was 50/50 between made up or a rare Welsh name I'd never heard of. I like it - it looks very name-shaped to me.

MerryMarigold · 31/03/2014 18:35

I immediately thought made-up and American South, like Rosa Lyn. I also assumed girl. I like the name Danae which is a Greek name, girl's.

Whatsyourpoint · 31/03/2014 19:30

Just no.

florascotia · 31/03/2014 20:46

Further to Cashmere's comment, Daelyn might be derived from Old Norse, but its origins would be from a place name not a personal name.

'Dael' is Old Norse/Viking for valley (it survives today as 'dale'). A very similar word is found in Old English.

Winn/Vinn is Old Norse for 'meadow' or 'pasture'.

So Dael + Winn could perhaps give Daelwinn = modern Daelyn = meadow valley

I don't think I'd choose it as a name for a daughter, but many people do use place names as personal names.

However, whatever its origins, it does rather remind me of the East Asian brand name 'Daewoo'.

  1. Welsh?
  2. Made up?
  3. Sci-fi/fantasy origin?
  4. More trouble than it's worth, unless you and the name are both Welsh.
EirikurNoromaour · 31/03/2014 20:55

Terrible.

nkf · 31/03/2014 20:56

A version of Dylan? Welsh in origin? Not very nice to my ears.

ashtrayheart · 31/03/2014 20:57

I quite like it.

ChickenMe · 01/04/2014 09:38

Sounds yokel and cheap.

SecretNutellaFix · 01/04/2014 09:49

No. just no.

Nocomet · 01/04/2014 09:49

WTF, how do I pronounce that? Boy or Girl???

squoosh · 01/04/2014 11:26

Looks very Game of Thrones to me too.

Gleely shags her brother and then slits his throat.

MrsMopOnTop · 01/04/2014 11:42

Not my style sorry - Is too similar to all the other -lyn names.

Shaelyn
Braelyn
Daelyn
Kailyn
Jailyn

They don't conjure nice associations.
Very early 00's faddy.

DiamondsAndRust · 01/04/2014 15:55
  1. Character from a futuristic dystopian movie (e.g. Hunger Games, Blade Runner)
  2. American reality TV star
looki · 01/04/2014 16:06

My first impression is Anerican South as well. It's not to my taste and doesn't sound very nice when I say it out loud.

Beastofburden · 01/04/2014 16:08

I can't tell what gender the child is. I'd have to ask how to pronounce it. It does look a little bit pretentious tbh.

Its quite pretty once you get used to it.

RalphRecklessCardew · 01/04/2014 16:41

Another one who thought of Daenerys from GOT.

Bue · 02/04/2014 18:44

My first thought was also Daenarys Stormborn of House Targaryen. Is that what you were going for?

mateysmum · 02/04/2014 18:47

Sounds like a kind of bleach or fabric dye.

No, just No

MirandaGoshawk · 02/04/2014 18:50

It's the kind of name that would be fine once you knew the child. Trying to be kind You'd be unlikely to get five in the class. But you would spend your life/as would Daelyn spelling it and getting birthday cards spelt wrongly. Not fair on the child, imo.

I gave my DD an unusual spelling and even MIL gets it wrong. Also my DS's name is the ordinary spelling but people assume that his is weird too, because DD's is. So they get them both wrong. V. annoying!

Is it a girl? What about Rae? That's an actual name.

honeybeeridiculous · 02/04/2014 18:52
