John....

DH is set on using it if DC1 (due late summer) is a boy.

It's a family name and really important to him, so i'd like to be able to use it, I just don't LOVE the name. But then I don't really love ANY boys names.

I'd be more tempted if we could name the baby Johnny with a more modern middle name. I'm thinking Johnny Flynn, Johnny Beau etc, but DH would definitely want John on the birth certificate.

Any thoughts?

Jonathon is lovely too

..or Johan. I think Johan is my favourite.

squoosh · 31/03/2014 17:36

I think Johans should look like this.

John....
SisterChristina · 31/03/2014 18:01

John has to be the ultimate 'meh' name I'm afraid. There are so many squillions of older Johns around (and always have been) that I think it's way too early for a revival of the name.

Johnny only marginally better imo.

My mum was going to name DB 'John', but was put off when someone pointed out it was a nickname for a toilet. And Johnny is a nickname for something else pretty undesirable!

cafecito · 31/03/2014 20:20

Jonathan?

louloutheshamed · 31/03/2014 20:30

I have a 7 mo John. I'd like to call him johnny but his 3yo big brother instate his name is 'Baby John' Grin

Obviously its not an unusual none but actually on a baby it stands out in a sea of Ollies and Alfies and Jacks and Matthews

nochips · 31/03/2014 20:49

There is a John in DS's class (aged 4)and my first thought was how nice it was to see the name coming back.

Mrswellyboot · 31/03/2014 20:50

I think that's why I like John. Jack, Ava, Ella are gorgeous and then used a lot.

Our baby has a plain name that people say 'oh, that's different' bit so simple but it's a bit like John- underused

Ludways · 31/03/2014 20:55

My ds, who is 12, has always loved the name John and wishes we'd called him it.

I've grown to live it myself, much nicer than Johnny, which is a condom, lol

Nataleejah · 31/03/2014 22:00

Yes!

thegreylady · 31/03/2014 23:09

I have a wonderful dgs named John he is 16 and very happy with his name. I also know a 6 year old John who is the only one in the school. It is a lovely name. Neither of them is ever called Johnny though.

johnnycastle · 31/03/2014 23:20

Johnny is a lovely name Smile

kerala · 01/04/2014 09:23

Love it. Sounds refreshingly original amongst hordes of Jacobs and Noah's

Jack is traditionally a nickname for John. So you could put John on the BC but call him Jack. (If you like Jack!)

Or, would your DH accept using John as a middle name? Or John as first name on BC but call him by his middle name? I know plenty of people who do this eg family name is Richard so the boy is called Richard Alexander but is known by Alexander.

HopelessDei · 02/04/2014 15:05

Only among old people brokenhearted55a Wink

Very cool name I think.

FlipFantasia · 02/04/2014 17:22

Definitely a cool name - think Johnny Cash cool.

ChickenMe · 04/04/2014 00:17

Johnathon is underused and classic

NigellasDealer · 04/04/2014 00:21

my son is a John

VodIsGod · 04/04/2014 00:30

My 8 yo DS1 is John on his BC, but we just call him Johnny. It is also my Dad's name but he has never been called Johnny so it separates the two. I loved it for years before I had children and was so pleased to have a son to give it to. Still love it now.

BlackberryandNettle · 04/04/2014 11:20

really like John and Jonathan, Johnny is a nice nickname. I know 3 jon/Johns aged 65, 34 and 6 and it suits them all, nice solid name

BlackberryandNettle · 04/04/2014 11:21

Got to give him the proper name on the birth certificate really - think about when he's applying for jobs etc

Martie1 · 06/04/2014 10:02

Hey my cousin in John Francis but has always been known as Johnny even by his own mother and family so that John to Johnny would definitely work

Barbaralovesroger · 07/04/2014 00:38

Jonty

smokeandglitter · 07/04/2014 16:23

In prefer john to Johnny, the only johns I know now are in their twenties so a lovely traditional but not hugely used name.
