Bit of a weird one - I need middle names... for my 6yo DD!

So when DD was born we gave her a very safe some would say boring middle name. Then two years later had DS and couldn't choose between two middle names, so just thought what the heck and gave him both.

Never really thought about this until the last year or so, and then felt quite bad about making them different and 'uneven' IYSWIM. And then by complete coincidence DD recently commented about the difference.

So, DH and I have agreed that if she wants to she can choose another middle name and if we can, we will change it by deed poll. I don't know, maybe it's crazy and I haven't mentioned it to her yet, but if we could go ahead, I know she would be giddy with excitement.

We've said we would come up with a list of names for her to choose from.

Something a little 'out there' perhaps (DS' first middle name is unusual), and I know she would want/choose something quite pretty. I was thinking something musical or art related would really suit her but most of the associations I have are male (eg Vincent for her favourite artist ... or Banksy :o)

So far:
Melody (my middle name, she likes it)
Clara (nutcracker - although she would probably most associate it with the barbie version :o)
Dorothy (favourite book character)
Elise (one of her favourite pieces is Für Elise)
Rowan (just because I like it!)
Alison (my Nan's name)

I can't really think of many girls names generally, all the names I've fallen for recently have been for boys (Tristan, Elias, Benedict to name a few)

Ha, interesting how it seems to be boys that end up with more names :o

I'll definitely add Harmony to the list - I really like it and did mention it to her a while ago (when she asked me what Melody meant)

My DD wishes to add Galadriel to her names!

Was just going to say how about Benedicta or some other female version of the boys names you like?

DD is very young still so that's why we will only let her choose from a list of names we already approve of (and that go well with her existing names). Otherwise it'd be tinkerbell or something :o

Lovely idea to let her choose another middle name. Melody is very pretty, and a nice link to her Mama

However, If you like the sound of "Kyrie", but less so the actual meaning, then perhaps Kiri would suit? Obvious musical connections to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa (if you enjoy opera, then that'd lead to all sorts of interesting explorations with her as she grows).

Apparently, the Maori original refers to the naturalistic "tree bark" (protection?).

Sidenote :
As your DD likes Coco the Cupcake Fairy (!), it may hold extra appeal that, in Japanese culture, Kiri refers to "the Princess tree" (Paulownia). Tradition was to plant one at the birth of a baby girl, the harvested wood from which was then handcarved into her first kimono dresser.

DD7 is going to have two middle names added on shortly. She doesn't have an official one and feels left out. She is getting one which we meant to give her all along (but didn't for reasons too complicated to go into) and we use at home anyway, plus one she has picked herself, which luckily was in our original shortlist!

I think it's lovely that they get to choose themselves. Plus they'll never be able to blame us!

So I had forgotten about this thread but a friend (who is lovely by the way... ) saw it and realised it must be me. First time being outed but thankfully not under my usual name. :o

Kind of embarrassed to say this but we never actually got around to doing it! Things have been a bit rough in many ways and it dropped off the priority list, although I did recently get some money that means we can go and do it.

However we did ask her shortly after this thread (can't believe it was so long ago!) and she immediately chose Melody!

I may ask her again to think of some more names. I have a feeling she would choose something from Greek mythology now as she is obsessed. And she keeps saying she wants a baby sister called Thalia (she loves Percy Jackson).

Also thank you autumnal for the info about Japanese culture as she is an anime fan and wants to learn Japanese so she will be very interested in that. :)

Also Eden is lovely. Apparently it's traditionally a male name but the only ones I've met have been female.

What a lovely friend, you should definitely use her name for your DD's middle name.

Not really! It's boring and not as awesome as Melody or Thalia.

I love Melody. And in fact the French version Élodie is on my baby name list

If she's into Greek Mythology and Anime (she's clearly an interesting kid; that's a great combination), it sounds like you'd now be pushed towards "Artemis-Sakura" or similar...

(Thalia's one of my favourites, too).

Melody (my middle name, she likes it): That's lovely.
Clara: beautiful
Dorothy: not my favourite, but still nice
Elise (one of her favourite pieces is Für Elise): not a fan of the piece of music (it just gets stuck in your head) but I really like the name.
Rowan (just because I like it!): I LOVE this, I would chose that for me personally (also because I have a very feminine/flowery first name)
Alison: it's nice. I prefer Alice, but the sentiment of naming her after her grandma is obviously very nice.

I personally also like the name Kira... I think it means sparkling in Japanese but it's actually a traditional name. It's used in Russia and other countries...
