How much has your taste in names changed?

Hi all,

So I'm only 21, still at university and not even in a relationship right now! So no babies for me just yet. But my best friend is due June 10th with her first son and she is really stuck on names. I thought it would be a good idea to just have a browse on here to get some suggestions for her.

This has got me thinking though about how different my preferences may be now compared to when I actually have kids myself (hopefully by my late 20s!) I see a lot of names on here that I love but I'm sure there will be whole new baby name trends in 6 or 7 years, and loads of names I love now may be way too over used by then. Are there any names that you loved a few years ago and would have used had you been pregnant then, but wouldn't use now?

10 years ago as a teenager, I loved Jayden and Isabella.

Now, it's more like Nathaniel, Theodore, Adelaide.

As a teen I planned to have three DC - two DS and a DD.

Kieran Matthew
Alexander James
Ruby Edith

I have one DD with the middle name Edith and would still consider Alexander but nota as a first name.

In my twenties I was a big fan of K names Hmm

Now I like about a million girls names and hardly any boys names at all. In fact the only one I would even consider using is Sebastian.

As a teenager, I loved the name Isaiah. I still do but unfortunately the dh doesn't feel the same way. I must say I am kind of jealous of the posters who got there way and named there kids after their teenage infatuations.

I'm 25 and have always had a bit of a thing about names.

The type of names I like hasn't changed at all really, there's just more of them in a similar vein (pretentious according to my dp). But at least I've always been pretentious? Grin

Quite a lot. If I'd had my children at 20 they would have been called whatever sounded cool or trendy but I would have put a unique twist on it. 'unique' until you realise it carbon dates your child.

But some 20 year olds had the good taste I had to grow in to! My taste hasn't changed that much since my thirties though. I like classics but htings like Juliet and Louisa and Alice sound good now but I realise that at some point Julie, Louise and Alison will sound fresher.

Mine haven't changed. I'm in my late 40's, my dcs are early 20's late teens. The only thing is that my names have become extremely popular now. Beatrice, Harry, Alexander, etc.

When I was about 10 I wanted kids called Macauley (!), Hazel, Heather and Amanda. Apart front he first one they aren't bad names but totally not my style now!

When I was about 20 I liked Caroline, Caitlin, Lauren and Michael. I still hunk those names are lovely but they don't go with our last name at all!

Now about 30 I have had to pick similar names to the ones I like at 20 but with the main concern being how they sound with my new last name.

Ilikepancakes · 30/03/2014 18:48

D'oh *like not hunk!

I think the first time I really thought about names was in my teens and wanted Trek names. Some of my favourites were Chakotay, Jadzia and Nerys (not the Welsh name). I never really thought about it again until I got pregnant then panicked because I had no idea where to start. You never realise what a responsibility it is to name someone. You meet someone new and they say "Hi, I'm George" and you know that person is called George, but you have this person in front of you that doesn't have a name and you have to choose but how do you know you're getting it right? Shock

On a similar vain (as this thread, not my ramble) my sister still hasn't forgiven me that my 2yo's second middle name is a name that she and her XH wanted to give to their child if they had a daughter but they weren't having children because both have sleep disorders. As I said, second middle name and also I used the Welsh spelling - not to mention real child...

When I was 11 to early teens, I thought hyphenated names for girls were the way to go, I found them really "cool". A lot of it stemmed from a period of almost two years, living in the States (where my mom is from), and lots of girls seemed to have such names.

I have all my old diaries, and there is an entry from when I was 13, where I wrote how I'd like to have twin girls named Ashlee-Beth and Baylee-Rose!

A few others I recall liking were Gracie-May and Hollie-Jean.

Yet the boys names I've liked have always been classic types; I said from early teens I'd name a first son Jack (after my grandfather), and I did just that. I had my son when I was 19, but even just a handful of years after I liked names like Ashlee-Beth/Baylee-Rose, my taste in girl names had changed. Jack would have been Charlotte if he'd been a girl (a name I've since stopped liking for my own use).

My taste in girl names now matches that of the boys; classic, traditional names.

wigglylines · 31/03/2014 12:57

My girl's name taste hadn't changed, DD is called a lovely name I've had up my sleeve for years.

Boys ... well I was convinced I'd call a future boy Spike (as in Milligan) when I was in my 20s. So glad DS is not called Spike!

Suzietwo · 31/03/2014 13:01

not much

in my teens and 20s i always liked sebastian and patrick. i still do but neither acceptable to the bloke.

SlimJiminy · 01/04/2014 17:03

Am I the only one who never thought about what they'd call their kids when they were a teenager?!?! It just didn't occur to me.

I have to say though that even in the short time I've known my DH, names have popped into my head and I've gone off them for various reasons, so I'm sure it'll be a nightmare when the time comes...

WrongendoftheSTIX · 01/04/2014 20:15

I wanted 4 children when I was 10 or so up until mid twenties. I'm now thinking 2 Max!

Name-wise, pre-teen names liked were: Jamie (girl), Summer, Julian (famous five) and Zachery.

Then for many years (until naming became a reality) I adored India-Rose and Milly.

Had DC in my 30s and our lists were: Harriet, Felicity, Beatrice, Annabel or Eleanor.
Or: Arthur, Barnaby, Henry or Leo.
Very different!
