Jonah? I've always really like Joe/Joey, but don't think "Joe" is a complete name. I don't mind Joseph, but think Jonah is a bit different.

I know the meaning behind Jonah is not ideal but there are many names that don't have the best meaning when you look into it! I also connect it with the Aussie show Summer Heights High (any other fans?) but sure that will have died soon enough.

Personally I'd be put off by the bad luck meaning but if you don't like the nickname Jo/Joe, then I'd avoid it anyway.

I love it.

I think it is a lovely name and one that we would have considered if someone we knew well hadn't used it first :)

shoobidoo " I've always really like Joe/Joey"... I love Joe! lol.

I like Jonah. Not being from sea-faring folk (or remotely superstitious) I'd have no reticence in using it but that we already have a Joe in the family.

Also love SHH Grin

What about Josiah?

hunreeeal · 27/03/2014 17:21

It's fine, and makes a change from Noah.

ImAMonkeyMess · 27/03/2014 17:27

You'd be unlucky to have a Summer Heights High Jonah! I like it.

squoosh · 27/03/2014 19:10

It's quite nice, as long as he never plans a sea faring career.

You're right that lots of names have ick meanings, but in most cases you have to dig out the etymology to see that. E.g. James means 'supplanter, deceiver; Philip means 'horse lover', etc...

Jonah's different. That's a live English word meaning 'person you don't want on board because they're such a jinx we'll sink'. Ok, it's a rare, maybe even archaic usage, but I still wouldn't inflict it on a child.

I love it. But I am biased with a nephew called Jonah. He has only had positive feedback on his name too :-)

mummy1973 · 28/03/2014 20:20

love it

I like Jonah, and the old story wouldn't bother me in any way.

Jonas is also lovely, if you are put off using Jonah. Josiah too.
