What do you think of name list I have got so far?

They're all Greek names, but I'm expecting twins so I have to choose things that somehow fit. Ideally, I'd like to name them after someone, but I'm still gathering ideas, and may use his name as a middle for both of them.

For boys, I've narrowed it down to, as nothing else seems to fit:

Alekos
Dimos
Thanos

For girls, I've got more ideas, and recently added some more:

Aliki
Areti
Athene
Callisto
Nefeli
Stavroula
Stefina
Theano

Both of my daughters have names with 3 syllables, so the girls have to fit this. My dad told me that they're all terrible, so I'm not sure what to make of this. Blush

That does explain things and those names would work with a Greek surname.

In my case I want to reflect all of the countries we have connections to so was looking at names used in every country that have a nice meaning, not too biblical and have greek origins.I do understand that might not work for you though.

The first ones I thought of are Gregory and Marguerite but I'm wondering if they are a bit dull.

The only other thing I have to say is don't be influenced too much by your family it is ultimately your choice.

Gregory isn't my cup of tea. Marguerite is okay, it has a little bit of granny chic. Would you consider Béatrice? It's pronounced like bay a treez, I think it's very pretty; exotic but quite sensible.

I'm not too influenced by my family, but my dad is desperate to have a say. He wants me to use Emily, which I don't have anything against, but it's really too common for me. The other things he's suggested are terrible. Another one of his suggestions was Charlie-May, which is a bit too 90s for me. I told him I was sticking with the Greek theme, then he suggested Pandora! No boy suggestions so far, but he likes the idea of me naming a boy after him! Confused

Béatrice will always be pronounced more like beer triss in England.

OwlCapone · 24/03/2014 14:35

Oddly, my grandmother was Beatrice Marguerite :)

Ciwti · 24/03/2014 14:55

I think lots will try and pronounce it differently if they see the acute. However, it would probably end up Bay triss, which is still an improvement on the original. Smile It's a nice name though. The only other classic French names that are of the same sort of style and I like are Elodie and Marielle. However, Elodie isn't pronounced correctly by British people either. Confused

Beatrice Marguerite is a nice combination. Smile

For the Welsh, Eleri is a lovely choice! Wink I am biased, of course. It's hard thinking of something that isn't very overpowering. As a Welsh girl, I'll be honest and say most of our names are just terrible!

Aeronwy, which is Dylan Thomas' daughter's name, is quite pleasant. Ceirios (Kay reeos), Iola (Yola), Nerys and Rhian are quite nice. Rhian is quite common in North Wales, among Welsh speaking families.

For boys, there isn't a lot of choice for masculine sounding names. Aeron (Ay ron) and Llyr (not recommended outside Welsh speaking areas) are my favourites. Deiniol (day nee ol, pronunciation will help you want to know where Deiniol Rd is in Bangor, as you leave the railway station), Emrys and Meilyr (May leer/May lur depending on area) are considerations.

As for the Austrian, that isn't something I can help with.

You see my problem now is that I like Welsh and french names more than greek ones! I may sack the Austrian idea but it's dh's connection and he wasn't bothered anyway.

I also have a huge soft spot for a bit of granny chic! I like Beatrice but don't know how theyd pronounce it here and also don't like how the English letter b is written in Greek. It'll still go on the shortlist though.Elodie and Marielle are lovely but too french for our surname.

My lovely granny was Welsh but had a sort of french name, Yvonne, that works with Beatrice and Marguerite too. Also got Thirza and Gwendoline from her family tree! Which I quite like.

The Welsh girls names are lovely. One of my best friends at school was called Rhian. Not keen on the boys names though but I think that's harder anyway.

Back to you ciwti, i certainly like your ideas better than your families suggestions although it's very traditional here to name children after their parents which is why I haven't heard many of the names on your list over here but there are lots of little Christinas,Sophias,Christos and Vassilis so that's not very inspiring either. Your daughters have lovely names so I'm sure you'll get it right I'm just not sure of twins with the same initials and similar names. The Marina I know has a sister called Avgi but I'm not keen on that as its very close to the Greek word for egg!
