Classic, but not common boy's name! Why so hard!

Hi,

Like many, DH & I, are finding boy's names so hard!

We are both traditionalist. We like classic names for boys. No surnames, cool names (we are too boring to carry this off) or old man or vintagey style names. I don't want a name that is common. This is not a concern of DH.

Finally surname starts with H and ends with IE. It rules out lots of y & ey first names(Rory, Toby etc).

So on DH list:

Henry (far too many h & y sounds with surname)
Christopher (far too many boys from my childhood called this)
William (too common & done for me)

Me (I'm not Scottish BTW, just seem to tend towards them):

Alister
Alec
Magnus

Only common choice is Benedict or Benjamin, preferably the former. However, Benedict is my brother's name & for someone who's been obsessed with baby names since childhood it just seems so disappointing to choose something that's already been chosen by your parents!

I know what you mean about disappointing to choose well used names, but think of it as standing your ds in good stead for life rather than something faddy or too obviously 'now'. I could have written the same post 8 weeks ago. I decided choosing a boys name best to go with strong classic name and to hell with worrying about popularity.

Benjamin is both classic and strong, Benedict a bit more 'now' but also a time honoured name. Both were on my list. My main concern about them was they'd be shortened to Ben forever.

I ended up choosing a name common to my boss, BIL and dh's best mate. Decided that in the end that's less relevant to my ds as he goes through life. It might be nice for your ds to share a name with his uncle.

If you both like these names, pick one and go with it, your first choice is closer to your heart and trawling through ever more names is unlikely to get you anywhere!

Btw Christopher is not a common name for boys now, reconsider?
