Is this idea too twee?

Giving your child a middle name which is the masculine version of their grandmother or feminine version of their grandfather?

One grandparent out of the four died a couple of years ago and we'd like them to be honoured but they're the wrong gender!

Don't want to say what the name is as I'm paranoid about outing myself, just wondering about the general idea?

No not at all.

People give their children family names all the time.

Bowlersarm · 14/03/2014 19:02

I think this is quite common. I like the idea as long as it is a recognised name.

LizLemonOut · 14/03/2014 19:04

Sounds reasonable to me, no more twee than calling the child after the same gender of grandparent

Wishfulmakeupping · 14/03/2014 19:06

No I think its a lovely idea

BananaHammocks · 14/03/2014 19:06

Good, good, just checking! A recognised name and a name I almost like enough to use at the first name so looks like that's decided!

Ohhhh can we be nosey and ask what it is?

meditrina · 14/03/2014 19:10

It sounds Ok to me. Unless you're trying to create the feminine of Tyson or similar.

CountessOfRule · 14/03/2014 19:12

DS1's middle name is my grandmother's maiden name (almost - think Roberts > Robert).

If it's a last DC then yes, why not.

CountessOfRule · 14/03/2014 19:13

Presumably you're thinking of eg Henry/Harriet or Joseph/Josephine? Yes yes.

callamia · 14/03/2014 19:13

It's nice. My son was born on his dead great-grandmother's birthday, but there really wasn't a masculine version of her name otherwise we'd have used it.

PurplePidjin · 14/03/2014 19:14

Georgina or Josephine would be fine. Dereketta or Keithelina might be frowned upon...

silasramsbottom · 14/03/2014 19:16

My grandmother was the youngest of four girls. She was landed with Jamesina. Some names can crossover, others definitely don't.

HootHootTootToot · 14/03/2014 19:21

I wouldn't do it but I don't think there is anything wrong with it. It's just a middle name after all.

BananaHammocks · 14/03/2014 19:22

Not saying what it is but yes more like Georgina or Josephine than Dereketta or Keithelina! An actual name!

It's a lovely idea IMO. Not twee at all Smile.

BabyMummy29 · 14/03/2014 19:30

I was given my mother's maiden name as my middle name. It happens to be a boy's christian name as well, I spent my childhood with kids asking me why I had a boy's name as my middle name. Have always hated it and wouldn't inflict it on anyone else. Thankfully this tradition seems to have died out.

clippityclop · 14/03/2014 19:30

It's fine, a lovely idea. We've been doing our family tree and it's great to see names passed on, gives a real link to the past.

hunreeeal · 14/03/2014 19:35

It's a good idea Smile

GiniCooper · 14/03/2014 19:40

I've done it.
DD has a nickname of her grandfathers full name.
It's a given girls name with a different spelling so it worked well for us.

Sarahplane · 14/03/2014 19:57

I have a Brendan named after his granny Brenda. As long as it's a normal name that you like it's fine. Something like stuartina would be pushing it though.

CheesyBadger · 14/03/2014 19:58

Love the idea
