Giving your child a middle name which is the masculine version of their grandmother or feminine version of their grandfather?

One grandparent out of the four died a couple of years ago and we'd like them to be honoured but they're the wrong gender!

Don't want to say what the name is as I'm paranoid about outing myself, just wondering about the general idea?

No not at all.

People give their children family names all the time.

I think this is quite common. I like the idea as long as it is a recognised name.

It sounds Ok to me. Unless you're trying to create the feminine of Tyson or similar.

DS1's middle name is my grandmother's maiden name (almost - think Roberts > Robert).

If it's a last DC then yes, why not.

Presumably you're thinking of eg Henry/Harriet or Joseph/Josephine? Yes yes.

It's nice. My son was born on his dead great-grandmother's birthday, but there really wasn't a masculine version of her name otherwise we'd have used it.

Georgina or Josephine would be fine. Dereketta or Keithelina might be frowned upon...

My grandmother was the youngest of four girls. She was landed with Jamesina. Some names can crossover, others definitely don't.

I wouldn't do it but I don't think there is anything wrong with it. It's just a middle name after all.

I was given my mother's maiden name as my middle name. It happens to be a boy's christian name as well, I spent my childhood with kids asking me why I had a boy's name as my middle name. Have always hated it and wouldn't inflict it on anyone else. Thankfully this tradition seems to have died out.

It's fine, a lovely idea. We've been doing our family tree and it's great to see names passed on, gives a real link to the past.

DD has a nickname of her grandfathers full name.
It's a given girls name with a different spelling so it worked well for us.

I have a Brendan named after his granny Brenda. As long as it's a normal name that you like it's fine. Something like stuartina would be pushing it though.
