What do you think of Bryony/Briony. Surname Thorne. I am thinking of Alexandra or Kate as a middle name

BlondeMalteser · 15/03/2014 17:28

yes it was a typo thanks to those who understood that.

Think I will have to ditch the name :( As some have said, I'm sure many people won't even know Bryony is a flower but I agree it does look a bit silly to those who are aware. fideline I really love Briar..hadn't thought of that! Will put that to the hubby :)

oh SolveaProblemLikeMaria I just saw your message! Yes it was a typo :) Not sure why it had to be pointed out in such a way...it's fairly obvious I just missed the key! But hey ho :) I agree I had never considered Briar Rose but I do remember thinking it was a beautiful name when watching Sleeping Beauty! Will see what the "to be" hubby things of Briar :)

I see! I am not clearly not functioning at top speed today Blush

BlondeMalteser · 15/03/2014 17:35

haha no worries Alisvolatpropiis (love the name by the way..was tempted all through my teens to get it as a tattoo!)

I'm utterly biased as it was on my short list and she's my incredibly cute niece.

Yes Briar Rose Thorne would be a bit much Grin

Trills · 15/03/2014 21:09

I think it's lovely.

I wouldn't put Rose with Thorne, even as a middle name, but no problem with Bryony and Thorne.

Ham69 · 15/03/2014 21:15

If you're going to use Winslett as a surname, not sure I'd use Kate as a middle name.

BlondeMalteser · 15/03/2014 21:52

Thanks everyone. Yes I definitely wouldn't use Rose considering my surname. Thanks for the suggestions though!

Ditch it, she will thank you for it. And people do say it brian-nee, whether you want them to or not. I was teased endlessly over how it sounded like Brian. And one or two people have told me they think my name is ugly Blush

If you actually like it, could you use it as a middle name. Alexandra Bryony Thorne for example? Middle names don't really matter IMO.

BlondeMalteser · 15/03/2014 22:46

Strawberryswing that surprises me. I know a few bryony's and I've always thought it was lovely ad others have said the same. I just never connected it to Brian. I still hae a way to go so will continue thinking. I am very drawn to briar

strawberryswing · 15/03/2014 22:51

Maybe it is just my area, the brian thing was very much picked upon and was taken the piss out of royally through my entire time at primary school, and a bit of secondary school too. Didn't help I was in a class full of people with normal ordinary names.

Hope you come to a name you love :)

fideline · 15/03/2014 22:52

OP I would expect someone trying to name a girl after a man called Brian to use 'Brianna' (rather american) not Bryony. Just can't hear that at all.

StrawberryY are you in the UK?

fideline · 15/03/2014 22:54

That sounds horrible Strawberry. Maybe it is not so much your area as an accent thing?

strawberryswing · 15/03/2014 22:56

Yes I'm in the UK.

It was probably just the shitty kids I went to school with, I get that they pick up on anything sometimes but it certainly made my life no easier having a name that make me stand out like a sore thumb.

Maybe it's more popular in other area who knows? I don't think the Op is considering it now anyway, what with the thorne connection (which wouldn't have even crossed my mind!)

MmeMorrible · 15/03/2014 23:04

I like it. But I can't help thinking about Bryony the elf from Arthur Christmas. "I can wrap any present in the world using only 3 pieces of sticky tape!!!"

Probably just my rather odd sense of humour though.

fideline · 15/03/2014 23:04

I think names cause less bullying now, generally speaking, just because there is so much more variety in names, greater multi-culturalism etc.

Glad you survived it Smile

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/03/2014 02:03

Me too OP (the tattoo).

What style of name do you like at the moment?

Theonlyoneiknow · 16/03/2014 17:44

I think it is a lovely name, was on my short list with Bronwen and Bethany

squoosh · 16/03/2014 17:56

Bryony wears brown cords and talks earnestly about the exploitation of baboons in the Congo.

thegreylady · 16/03/2014 18:08

I like Tansy which is another underused plant name :)

I thinks it's beautiful, especially the Briony spelling. No associations with Brian for me.

badtime · 16/03/2014 18:32

CorusKate, Tansy was one of the herbs which was used to induce an abortion.

(I like Tansy short for Constance)
