Bit early but names that can be shortened to Libby?

I'm only 5+2 and so obviously this is a bit premature, and ninja-cupid could well be a boy but if it's a girl then my favourite girls name is Libby but I feel I need it to have a longer version for job interviews etc when older.

I always wanted to call my daughter Elizabeth for this reason but my partner has twins already and their mum to his disdain decided to call them Ellie and Ella... So Elizabeth is a bit off the cards really.

So far I've thought of Olivia, any other ideas?

My DD has a nickname that isn't quite right for her name - we liked the shortening (indeed picked tgat first like you) and the long name but not the long name usually associated with the nickname, or the nickname usually associated with the long name. It's very very similar to Libby from Olivia when normally it would be Livvy. I won't say it as it will totally out me (they are longstanding names but both are unusual nowadays so putting them together makes it very obvious to anyone we know!) but happy to PM you if you're nosy :)

It works absolutely fine. Nobody has a problem with it. Go with Olivia, use Libby. They're both great!

How about Libby as a middle name?

Marcipex · 09/03/2014 08:28

I don't see Elizabeth,( lovely name), as anything like Ellie and Ella.
If she's Elizabeth on paper and spoken of as Libby I don't see how there could be any difficulty.

StrawberryMoose · 09/03/2014 08:43

Sorry OP, I have nothing massively helpful to add, I'm struggling to get past the Ellie/Ella twin combo!

I really like the name Lilibeth though. Could be shortened to Libby?

Carsandtrucks · 09/03/2014 10:03

Call her Libby

alita7 · 09/03/2014 10:11

I would have thought what they get called at school would be what they said their name was- I was always insistent on being Alex as that's what everyone called me.

I might take the lily Beth idea and adjust it to another pair of names I like, maybe lily Beatrice or something.

So mixed view as to whether Olivia can be Libby... Livvy sounds similar to Libby in my opinion so I think I might go with Olivia if I can't find an L-B combo I like enough. Now ill probably have a boy lol

Elizabeth is nothing like Ellie and Ella - use it!

Hulafox · 09/03/2014 15:54

I agree that Elizabeth would be different enough.

I also think that Libby is a perfectly sensible name in its own right. I'm 34 and I think for our generation, it was strange to have a shortened name on a birth certificate, but it isn't any more. With the number of Poppy, Ruby, Daisy, Ellie, Millie, Tilly, Maisie, Lexi etc names, I don't think by the time our littles ones are applying for jobs, anyone would bat an eyelid at Libby as a first name.

bouquetofpencils · 09/03/2014 16:48

Libertine

alita7 · 09/03/2014 17:20

Had a chat with oh who said he really likes Olivia :) I wish I could have Elizabeth but I still think it's too many els. Although we did brain storm one or two other options and might end up with Beatrice though then I wouldn't get Libby :(

Lydia? Or Lydia Beatrice maybe?

Tranquilitybaby · 10/03/2014 12:23

My daughter is Liberty and gets called Libby sometimes

pommedeterre · 10/03/2014 13:19

Ellie and Ella is bad!

Agree Libby on its on is fine.

squoosh · 10/03/2014 14:44

Ellie and Ella is weird, surely some people call Ella Ellie too? Ellie, Ella and Elizabeth would be even weirder though.

Just call her Libby as that's what you'll be calling her 100% of the time. I'm not sure why you'd think it would hinder her job prospects.

alita7 · 10/03/2014 14:47

I love Lydia (picked it as my confirmation name years ago) and asked oh who shot down that idea :(

Pommedeter unfortunately the ellie and Ella thing is out of our control, oh and his ex had already broken up so she called the shots and decided it would be 'twinnie' they even have the same middle name - my oh was not pleased at all . they're not even identical and have rebelled against this by being totally different girls in every way possible! If it was me and I wanted similar nicknames like that (I wouldnt) then iI'd at least give the option of individuality by calling them Eleanor, Elizabeth , Elsie, eloise or elisia or something! Anyway rant over...

Obviously no offence intended to anyone who has similarly named kids. I just wouldn't do It Myself as like giving kids individuality and it's confusing.

Magix · 10/03/2014 14:53

I would call her Elizabeth . I would say Ellie would be short for Helen or Eleanor and Ella short for Arabella/Isabella etc so nothing to do with Elizabeth . And Ellie and Ella aren't similar to Libby .

Rtfairy · 10/03/2014 14:57

Olivia Beatrice is beautiful.

gilliangoof · 10/03/2014 15:01

I'd just use 'libby'. Pity you can't use elizabeth but I agree he can't have 3 daughters called ellie, ella and elizabeth.

gilliangoof · 10/03/2014 15:03

This thread has put me off the names ella, ellie and elizabeth.

squoosh · 10/03/2014 15:08

Ella and Ellie have the same middle name? Ellie May Smith and Ella May Smith.

Holy Moses totally bizarro!

squoosh · 10/03/2014 15:09

Maybe no one told her she had twins, she might just think she has one extremely fast moving Ellie.

squoosh · 10/03/2014 15:10

Their mother sounds like one 'ell of a woman. Grin

(I'll stop now)

Magix · 10/03/2014 15:11

But your dh would say "I have three daughters , Ellie Ella and Libby" wouldn't he ?
