Here's a challenge...

Names for a baby girl that don't start in A or E, end in -a or -ie (or y), are outside the top 50, not shooting up the popularity charts AND not too barmy.

Told you it was a challenge Grin

Everything I love so far seems to tick one or all of the above boxes, so I'm looking to add a bit of variety to my list. The names on my longish longlist that meet these criteria so far (none of them feels quite right though):

Juno
Camille
Juliet
Claudine
Vivienne

Any more?

I was bored at work so took a scientific approach. Took the spreadsheet of 2012 names, took out all ending in -a, -ie, -y, -ee, -i, or starting with a or e, took out all the top 50. Then compared with 2011's list and took at all that had jumped 100 places or more since then. This left me with 200; it was a bit hard to program out 'barmy' names ;-) but these were my favourite of those that were left (huge apologies for all lower case but I couldn't be bothered to spend the extra 5 minutes remembering how to get them back into sentence case...):

beatrice/beatrix
beth/bethan
bridget
caitlin
carmen
carys
catherine (any other spelling variation)
claire
cleo
coral
fern

Moggle, I reckon you win the internet today! That's just amazing, thank you. It's quite a short list, all things considered, isn't it?

I'm going to go through all these suggestions with a pencil and paper and make up a sparkling new list (on the phone in a hospital waiting room this morning). At a glance, I really like Hope, Celeste, Fern, Faith. Anouk has to be one of my favourite names ever but my first cousin's child is called that. I never see her or her parents (different countries) but my mum is close to the sibling whose granddaughter she is. It would be weird, wouldn't it?

Emmeline was top of my original list, but it was almost completely populated by 'E' names or -a endings. I still think it's a beautiful name but don't want her to spend her life going "no, sorry, not Emily..." "actually it's Emme- LEEN...."

I also love Lois and Kate but can't use either of them sadly. I've never come across Madinah before Uri and it's very interesting so I will overlook your shameless flouting of the rules Wink
