Or Morris. Opinions please.

Would also be an alliteration. Not liking any boys names ATM. Any suggestions welcome.

Have just remembered Ludivine (French = divine light)

florascotia · 26/02/2014 10:11

Wrong thread! Sorry!

Cookethenook · 26/02/2014 14:09

Morris is my favorite name. Moss for a nickname. Unfortunately it didn't suit DS at all.
I also liked Ira, Alvy, and Morton. We ended up calling him Rowan.

tammytoby · 26/02/2014 14:12

I think Maurice is great, pronounced Morris though. Will probably make a comeback along with other old names like Stanley or Arthur.

fideline · 26/02/2014 14:14

Maurice has, I think, very gay over-tones thanks to the E M Forster novel. Which is fine, obviously, but not leaving him much leeway. Bit like naming him Butch, or somesuch (?) Also makes me think of a Morris Minor, sorry!

tammytoby · 26/02/2014 14:17

I have never heard of that novel, do you think many people/kids have read it?

fideline · 26/02/2014 14:18

Leonard?
Jonty?
Ernest?
Rupert?
Eugene?
Jolyon?
Eustace?
Leopold?

squoosh · 26/02/2014 14:22

I haven't read the book but have seen the film, the name certainly doesn't make me think 'gay man' though.

fideline · 26/02/2014 14:22

Don't know. It's difficult isn't it? Not toddlers obviously. But teenagers might.

E M Forster often makes it into Secondary English curriculum. Not Maurice in my day, admittedly, but that was in the bad old 'no promotion of homosexuality' era. Plenty of teenagers will read it themselves though.

I suppose it depends whether OP is worried about pigeon-hole connotations.

ToffeeJungle · 26/02/2014 16:22

My Grandad was a Maurice. He was fab, the name is not.

Anton is ok though much prefer Antony.

Awful just awful and I rarely say that about a name. Though if you do go with it Morris is a better spelling IMO!

flowerygirl · 26/02/2014 17:06

I think Maurice is ridiculously cool. But I think a lot of people wouldn't 'get' it. My husband wanted to call our DS Truman, we tested it out on everyone and they all laughed in our faces!!

SpookedMackerel · 26/02/2014 17:12

We live in Germany and the German version (Moritz) seems to be really popular - we know 5 under sixes called it.

At first I didn't like it at all, but it has really grown on me now, and I actually think it sounds really cool. Not sure about Maurice though. I like here that the first syllable is a bit drawn out, like mooore-its.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/02/2014 20:27

I like Maurice. I do think of the Forster novel, but it's a good book and it doesn't colour the name for me, and it's not like anybody in the school playground etc is likely to have read/heard of it!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/02/2014 20:28

Fideline - I really don't think many contemporary teenagers are likely to pick Forster as their bedtime reading, and, even if they do, it's unlikely to be, 'Maurice.' Grin

BabyMummy29 · 26/02/2014 20:32

Depends how it's pronounced. I would pronounce it as Morris, but some would say it as Mo-reece.

It's ok, but a bit old-mannish

Redbexgreen · 26/02/2014 22:28

There is a 2 year old Morris at our nursery, people are a little Hmm when the first hear it but it doesn't take long before they all think his name is brilliant - it definitely suits him.

There is also a Boris :)
I've never heard of that book before so never thought about the gay overtones

VivaLeBeaver · 26/02/2014 22:32

I know a Maurice, pronounced Morris. No one has ever pronounced it Mau-reece, that sounds American to me?

It is an old man name though.

SimplySara · 26/02/2014 22:35

Prefer Morris, Maurice is okay but Anton is not a fav. It just sounds sleazy to me for some reason.

What about Morley?

fideline · 27/02/2014 00:27

Am I vastly overestimating the average teenager Remus?

I do that.

GibbsIsMine · 27/02/2014 00:59

I like Morris with Moss as a nn. But I got laughed at for liking Diggory so possibly not best placed to advise Smile

GibbsIsMine · 27/02/2014 01:00

I love Amos too.

Luciferbox · 27/02/2014 08:55

I know a baby Maurice, he totally suits the name. Lovely name

Driveway · 27/02/2014 10:13

I like Morris nn Moss.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/02/2014 22:33

Fideline - well, I have two teens and have taught hundreds and hundreds of them and even my v v well read dd1 hasn't read it! However, perhaps there are circles of teenagers arranging Forster bookclubs as we speak - I just haven't met them!
