I'm pregnant and if it's a girl, I'd like a name beginning with M (for some reason). Do you think these are too '50 year old lady living in the home counties'? Suggestions welcome!

I've got a Marianne. She's a great advertisement for it. Feisty, clever and gorgeous. Do it!

BadlyStuffedWalrus Mine too - I think that all Mariannes are just fab. They can't help it!

NadiaWadia · 25/02/2014 09:17

There has not been one person on this thread who doesn't like it!

Love Marianne, gorgeous name.

squoosh · 25/02/2014 11:05

Marilyn is a bit blowsy.

Marianne is lovely.

flowerygirl · 26/02/2014 16:42

DH won't budge on Marianne! He is so hard to please! Grr. Shame as it's such a lovely name.

He has suggested Heather or Caitlin! I already know a couple of babies born recently called Caitlin and I'm not a fan of Heather.

One name we can agree on is Lydia, which I am warming too. What do you all think?

squoosh · 26/02/2014 16:45

Heather is ok as is Lydia, not keen on Caitlin.

None a patch on Marianne though!

squoosh · 26/02/2014 16:49

I have a theory that men's favourite names belong to girls they fancied in their teen years. Their taste is always much more retro, 70's 80's retro rather than trendy retro.

flowerygirl · 26/02/2014 16:54

Haha. Well apparently my DH had a crush on a girl at uni for a year, who coincidentally has the same name as me! And it's not a common name!

I know, I love Marianne but he says no. I'll work on him! This will be our second. We actually fought so much about names last time that I offered for him to not be present at the birth (he's squeamish) if I could choose the name!

Lydia is very nice too (but not quite as good as Marianne!)

aoife24 · 26/02/2014 18:19

I heard an interview with Marianne Faithful (referenced above) in which she said her name was originally Marian and Mick Jagger still calls her that today. Marianne is more definitely more glam. Also think of her of off the statutes in France, vive la republique and all.

NadiaWadia · 26/02/2014 18:22

Oh really? Surprised about that, as I know her mother was from Germany, so I thought it was a European thing.

lljkk · 26/02/2014 18:35

Both M & M very pretty in my mind.
I'm not a fan of Lydia,Caitlin is extremely popular which sours it for me; Heather is a nice change.

ginzillas · 26/02/2014 19:15

aiofe24 she's Marian Evelyn, I read somewhere. Both lovely names.

CormoranStrike · 26/02/2014 23:18

My favourite M name for a girl is Mirrin.

CormoranStrike · 26/02/2014 23:19

Lydiaislovely.

systemsmalfunction · 27/02/2014 00:13

Mabel and maeve and maud are lush. Mary is also very cute. Martha also

Lydia is ok but does make me think eyelid. Lottie?

angeltop · 27/02/2014 00:18

Have you considered Marissa

lljkk · 27/02/2014 08:03

Maricela is one of my fave names (Maw-ree-SELL-uh). Marci, Mari, Cell, Cella all nns.

Driveway · 27/02/2014 10:14

I like Marlene. Lydia is Ok.

BadlyStuffedWalrus · 27/02/2014 19:25

Lydia is brilliant, but I would spend my time singing Lydia the Tattooed Lady to a child of that name. Not necessarily a downside though.

GerundTheBehemoth · 01/03/2014 16:55

My name's Marianne. Name choice was inspired by the artist Marianne North, according to my parents. It's nice to see that MN approves :) People do get it wrong quite a lot though. I have been called Marian and Mary-Anne countless times. My ex's dad called me Mary-Anne for NINE YEARS despite me or my ex or ex's mum correcting him every single time. I also sometimes get called Maria and (strangest of all) Anne-Marie.

My nickname when small was Manny (coined by big sister) and some family and friends still call me that. Other people call me Maz or Mazza, but mostly people use my full name.

haleyalannahxo · 01/03/2014 18:16

I like Marilyn and Marianne - not a fan of Marlena though. Was he ok with Martha? That one's one of my top names. How about;

Matilda
Millie
Madeleine
Mirabelle
Maude
Mary
Marnie
