What do you think of the name Avia for a girl? (AYE-V-A) when I say "aye" I mean like rhymes with hey, bay etc. I am thinking either:

Avia
Avia Belle
Avia Mai/May

Opinions? Or even alternatives?

Don't like Avia (love Ava, but I agree, definitely popular). I know a Zoelle, not a Zoella, and also a Zoe-Elle.

Only1scoop · 23/02/2014 07:35

Holly....yes I'm off to the gym later in my Avia trainers and hate to tell you but I used to have an Avia watch....Confused

meditrina · 23/02/2014 07:38

Avia looks like it's missing its 'n' but it's a name I could get used to.

Floella (as in the marvellous Benjamin) is much nicer than Zoella.

NigellasDealer · 23/02/2014 07:40

sorry but Avia sounds like a car, like Cortina or Astra, or indeed a car hire company.
Ava is very pretty.

Nectarines · 23/02/2014 08:07

I think Avia is a brand of budgie food.

LCHammer · 23/02/2014 08:09

Avia sounds like something to do with flying, aviation. So another 'no', I'm afraid. Zoella is ridiculous. My iPhone is predictive spelling it as Zorilla.

Eastpoint · 23/02/2014 08:12

& Avios are what British Airways now call frequent flier miles.

MrsRV · 23/02/2014 08:32

Avia is lovely OP. Avia Belle is really pretty. I really like it. We've had loads of people say they don't like our chosen name of Ariane with Ari for short. I didn't even think that was too "out there"!!!

Eastpoint · 23/02/2014 08:48

Ariane is the French version of the mythological name Ariadne so fairly established. People who don't like it are probably used to associating it with the French space programs, albeit subconsciously.

Avis is bird- I think.

florascotia · 23/02/2014 12:14

According to this www.behindthename.com/name/avia, Avia is a variation of the Hebrew name Aviya, which (I think) is usually pronounced 'Ah-vee-ah'

Cigarettesandsmirnoff · 23/02/2014 12:16

Avia is lovely.

Who gives a shit what people think, if you like it go for it.

Martorana · 23/02/2014 13:12

"Avia is lovely.

Because you are naming another person who can't consent. So what other people think matters.

SS3J · 23/02/2014 13:12

It's ok. I would pronounce it AH-vee-uh though. Do you like it like that? Moves away from the aviation association.

Cigarettesandsmirnoff · 23/02/2014 13:40

marto did you ask your friends what you should call your children ?

Are you not capable of choosing a name because you the parent like it or it means something to you? Are you that insecure the opinions of your friends count more than your own? Confused

I would pronounce it like ss3j

DorothyGherkins · 23/02/2014 13:46

How about Aphra - there was a famous dramatist/poet in the 1600 s, Aphra Behn. Name comes from the Hebrew I think. A little bit unusual.

ladymia · 23/02/2014 13:54

Sounds like a brand of kitchen white goods

mumbaisapphirebluespruce · 23/02/2014 14:00

It's ok, but Ava is much nicer, and who cares if it's popular. I don't know any apart from Myleene Klass's daughter.

Other suggestions: Aria, Arianna, Anya, Eva.

sandberry · 23/02/2014 15:41

My instant thought was that Avia sounds like a name someone who likes Ava but thinks it is too popular would choose and seems I was right

However it is perfectly fine, so go for it if you like it. How about Ada or Ayla if you want other names that sound a bit like Ava.

bouquetofpencils · 23/02/2014 18:23

If you like Zoella, what about Luella?
It seems you really love Avia, I think people are just pointing out the issues your dd may face. For example I loved Marnie until someone pointed out in my local vicinity it was likely R Marni (our) would be used, put me right off ( it's still lovely, just not for my area!).
Ayda, Ada, Eva, Amy Amie, Anya... Loads of variants/similar names which could be less problematic.

bouquetofpencils · 24/02/2014 12:16

Oh also thought, friend named dd Octavia who goes by Tavia as self decided nn. By that logic I think I wouldn't think Avia was odd. If you link it to avian (birds) it becomes quite pretty. You might even be a trend setter. So if you love it I would totally go for it.
