How does one pronounce Georgiana, is it one n or Georgianna? Also is it a better middle name for Matilda than Georgina?

I meant THREE syllables.....durr

NadiaWadia · 22/02/2014 00:09

George -eee- arna.

I suppose people are getting the pronunciation 'George - jay- na' from that film 'The Duchess' with Keira Knightly, right?

I read that, yes, some people did pronounce it like that at the time but they were very much a minority. It was a fashionable affectation for a while for people in that particular social set to which the Duchess herself belonged to pronounce it in that weird way.

Most people would have used the George-eee-arna pronunciation, which is certainly more logical!

Yes it's George-ee-arna.

I think Matilda Georgiana is really pretty.

NadiaWadia · 22/02/2014 00:11

In the 1990s BBC 'P&P' you will see that Darcy's sister is referred to as 'George - ee -arna' - the normal pronunciation.

Jellypudmum · 22/02/2014 00:12

George jayna. Love that name when pronounced like this!

badtime · 22/02/2014 00:14

The 'jor-jay-nah' pronunciation was an affectation of the set Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (subject of 'The Duchess') was part of. It was and is usually and correctly pronounced 'jor-jee-ah-na'.

RandomMess · 22/02/2014 08:58

I think Matilda Georgiana (pronounced the way I said) flows much better, a different amount of syllables and the "a" on Matilda is hard and the "a" on the end of Georgiana is much softer so they have a different sound at the end of them.

I watched The Duchess a couple of months ago and I am certain they pronounced it George -eee- ahna not George - jay- na. I remember thinking that I had been expecting the latter pronunciation but it was actually the former.

MaxsMummy2012 · 22/02/2014 16:10

Bue, I've got the duchess on dvd and just checked and they definitely pronouce it jor-jay-nah in the film.

florascotia · 22/02/2014 16:27

As Badtime says, the 'Georg-ee-ay-na' pronounciation was a posh private way of speaking, copied to show political allegiance:

Alisvolatpropiis · 23/02/2014 15:48

Georg-ee-ah-na.

As various others have said George-jayna was an affected pronunciation by a particular set of rich people who were well known for their strange manner of speaking.

Chloerose75 · 24/02/2014 00:03

I say jaw-jay-na

noodlebum · 24/02/2014 10:05

George-eee-arna, with 1 n. Neither good for a middle name for Matilda though!

TickerSpecs · 24/02/2014 16:04

George-ee-ah-nah

devoncreamtea · 24/02/2014 22:25

it's jor-jayner.

NadiaWadia · 24/02/2014 22:35

No its not.

hoobypickypicky · 24/02/2014 22:36

George-ee-anna. I went to school with one. :)

mandbaby · 25/02/2014 14:52

George - arna

Onesleeptillwembley · 25/02/2014 15:00

Jor jar na with no emphasis on the 'r'.
Vvvvv grand friend of my grandmother was named this. Always loved the name.

meditrina · 25/02/2014 15:03

George--ee-arna

(George-ayna/George-arna only if you pronounce Edwardian as Ed-wah-dian, as it's the same dated affectation).
