Right, this may be a very silly and odd question - Scottish mners, is there such a thing as Shetland type names?
I'm expecting dc2 and would really like to honour my late granny's heritage.

Her name was Cecilia and the family I know of hers were called Annabelle (already used in my family, she was sadly a late cousin), Archibald, Sheila, davey.

Are there names that particularly popular on Shetland or am I asking a stupid question?
DS is called nathaniel James so it'd have to work with that
Tia

Sunniva - for a girl. Love it!
Local hairdresser is called this and hails fromShetland.

Google is your friend though ...

Salmotrutta · 13/02/2014 23:04

I'd imagine names that are truly Shetlander will be Nordic in origin?

AuntieBrenda · 13/02/2014 23:05

Well I did wonder salmontrutta - my gran had blonde hair and blue eyes. So doesy DS - me and DH ate very dark. He's a Nordic throwback!

Have you tried www.behindthename.com?

You can search names by origin quite easily.

Kara

JanePurdy · 14/02/2014 08:07

I remember a book set on Shetland with two characters named after the first man & woman who landed off Viking ships. He was Haki but can't remember what she was! Hmmm.

JanePurdy · 14/02/2014 08:10

It might have been Hekla??

BeaWheesht · 14/02/2014 08:12

Shea (shay) for a boy or girl

freerangeeggs · 17/02/2014 00:52

I've heard Osla before for a girl, which I thought was really pretty.

Apparently Freya was in common use on Shetland, but it's obviously quite popular across the country now.

Sunniva is gorgeous

BlueStarsAtNight · 18/02/2014 07:13

Why not use Cecilia? It's pretty, goes well with Nathaniel and has some nice nn's (cee-cee, cecily, etc)

galwaygirl · 18/02/2014 08:00

I've posted this before on here but I went to uni with a girl from Shetland called Vaila, named after one of the islands, and thought it was a lovely name

Sweetishdelight · 18/02/2014 20:42

Peedie (either sex)

bouncingbelle · 18/02/2014 22:18

Any mans name with -Ina at the end.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 19/02/2014 16:47

Lots of Ingrids. And on Orkney. Magnus is popular...Sunniva would be good, after the ferry. So perhaps also Hamnavoe or Hjaltaland for a boy Grin

cookingenthusiast · 19/02/2014 19:57

Definitely Magnolia
