Thoughts on Regan?

Pronounced Rae-gan. It's Irish apparently. I like it but I'm scared it'll sound American or chavvy (or both).
I want a strong name if I have a girl, nothing girly. Suggestions welcome!

It does sound American, sort of in a similar vein to Peyton etc.

I do like it, and wouldnt think twice if I heard it used, but I wouldnt use it myself.

donnie · 12/02/2014 13:40

Chavvy for a boy and disastrous for a girl - have you seen the Exorcist? Regan is the name of the girl who is possessed by Satan. Oh and also the name of one of King Lear's daughters, who forces her own dad out onto the streets and gouges out the Earl of Gloucester's eyes Shock

sebsmummy1 · 12/02/2014 13:43

Sorry, really don't like it.

squoosh · 12/02/2014 13:45

I'm aware of the Shakespearean pokey eyed link but to me Regan/Reagan is a surname and reminds me of that terrible American President.

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 12/02/2014 13:46

I always think of king Lear when I hear the name. I know 2 one is a 17yr old boy the other is a 12 yr old girl.

It's Reegan though the pronunciation ?

Only1scoop · 12/02/2014 13:47

No don't like sounds very American also Grin
It's an Irish surname

UriGeller · 12/02/2014 13:47

Agree with donnie. The Exorcist. And Ronald.

Only1scoop · 12/02/2014 13:47

Exclude the Grin
Fingers to fat

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/02/2014 13:48

I like ree-gan

And Peyton that was mentioned by the pp

The exorcist link would not bother me in the slightest. These days there's not a single name you couldn't link to a film or tv program or some guy/girl/alien/hamster somewhere.

Showy · 12/02/2014 13:50

I just think of the sadistic Shakespearean character. She was vile.

AuntieStella · 12/02/2014 13:51

I prefer Cordelia. But it's a heck of a lot better than Goneril.

TheScience · 12/02/2014 13:51

I think of King Lear/Ronald/The Exorcist too.

How about Tegan?

MoFoe1 · 12/02/2014 13:53

I actually like Reagan for a boy...was on my list but dh said noHmm

motherinferior · 12/02/2014 13:53

Not a good name if you're thinking she might look after you when you're older...

HyvaPaiva · 12/02/2014 13:54

I don't like it at all, sorry OP.

Onesleeptillwembley · 12/02/2014 13:59

Another one agreeing with Donnie. Seriously downmarket. And yes it's Irish, but a surname.

brunette123 · 12/02/2014 13:59

I think many people would end up saying "Reegun" not "Raegan" and sorry but it makes me think of the Sweeney and a surname rather than a first name but I don't like the surname as first name thing eg Mackenna, Mackenzie that the Americans sometimes go for nor do I like the name Ireland (Kim Basinger's daughter) or London (one of the Real Housewives' daughters) that seem fashionable nowadays but names are terribly subjective and personal so can understand why some appeal to others.

I like it in theory but it has too many bad associations -- The Exorcist and King Lear between them are bad enough, but there's the soundalike President and also John Thaw in The Sweeney (which isn't a bad association under the right circumstances, but is when it comes to girls' names).

squoosh · 12/02/2014 14:06

Apparently Gazza's son is called Regan.

UriGeller · 12/02/2014 14:09

There you go.

ListenToTheLady · 12/02/2014 14:11

It's certainly strong - but the Regan in King Lear is so evil, I just couldn't. I know what you mean about girl names and wanting a strong one, but I wouldn't go there!
