We finally sat down and talked about names. The contenders are:

Romilly (we both love this, but it is similar to our son's name and a distant friend has already used it. Does that matter?)
Xanthe
Beatrice
Tess (but short for what?)
Imogen
Georgia
Stella
Abigail

Surname is two syllables ending in er. Please help this be my last post..

Thanks all - I do find it helpful to get feedback! On Xanthe, it is very likely that she will be blonde, so presumably that would be an argument in its favour. DH thinks its a bit posh/try hard, I disagree (and would rather have a name that is seen as posh than the other end of the spectrum). The rhyminess of Stella and Georgia with our surname bothers me but DH says I'm mad and it's fine.

I love Stella but it does make me think of lager and that one has nasty connotations.

We have an Abigail so obv like that one.

Dh loves Georgia and I have always vetoed.

Have always liked Tessa as well.

But if Romilly is your fav go with that.

I love Tess (Tessa)

Stella was on my list but DH was Hmm due to the beer connection! How about Estelle or Estella? (Sorry if that's already been suggested - just skim read through thread!)

Otherwise I like Tess and Abigail from your list Smile

Romilly -- not keen. I hear the phrase 'roly poly' in my head when I hear this name. I prefer Romy, a nn for Rosemary.
Xanthe -- Nice but I think I agree with your DH.
Beatrice -- Very nice, feminine name.
Tess -- one of my favourites from your list, and while sometimes used as a nn for Tereza/Teresa, more often stands on its own.
Imogen -- I don't understand what people see or hear in this name. I don't get the appeal.
Georgia -- Not keen.
Stella -- My other favourite from your list.
Abigail -- Nice but a bit dated. Where I live an Abigail would get lost in the throngs of Abbys and Allys.

So Tess and Stella for me with Beatrice and maybe Xanthe also in the running.

Tess or Romilly. Both effortlessly cool.

I like Tess best from those. Just Tess is fine.
Imogen or Beatrice would be my second choice.
Dislike Romilly, Xanthe and Stella.

Xanthe, Beatrice, Georgia and Abigail are all nice.

I don't think Xanthe is too try hard. I know one and she is lovely and from your list, this and Tess are probably my favourites.

Sorry yes, unfortunately Stella does make me think of lager.

The rhyming thing would put me off too.

The distant friend thing wouldn't put me off Romilly but how close to your DCs name is it?

I have a Stella so I'm biased Smile. The only people who have mentioned the lager are my sister. I love it and have only met 1 other child with the name. Other than that I'd say Imogen

Tess is 100% gorgeous. Followed by romilly with 60%. Really hate Abigail, so clumsy.

Our DS's name starts with r and ends with y - so quite similar to Romilly! I really don't want it to be an issue, but at the same time don't want to make him feel less special/unique (or am I over thinking that..?).

It's a little matchy, by the sound of it.

Romilly! Everything else is super popular!

Report
LCHammer · 12/02/2014 05:57

Flavia also has the meaning 'blonde'.
Georgiana could be an alternative to Georgia.
I like Stella, Tess, Beatrice.

Alizeeod - Is everything other than Romilly really super popular? Including Xanthe and Tess?

Romilly - wouldn't use as sounds too similar to DS, plus not really a fan
Xanthe - ok, unusual but wouldn't say it's too posh
Beatrice - like it
Tess - love it as Tessa
Imogen - don't like , I think it's boring
Georgia - really like
Stella - like but wouldn't with an er surname
Abigail - same as Stella

Tess is a fairly popular name. Xanthe isn't, no. My mistake
