I know it's a bit old-fashioned, but I really like the name Ian. Short, nice sounding, simple. Is it too old-man though?

scottishmummy · 08/02/2014 22:11

Iain is scottish I like it

NinjaKangaroo · 08/02/2014 22:12

Sounds too dated, imo.

WillSingForCake · 08/02/2014 22:12

Roughly on a par with Norbert

This made me laugh out loud!

Well, back to the drawing-board I think. I just told DH that it's not very well-liked on here, and he replied 'maybe it's because it reminds people of Ian Huntley or Ian Brady!'. And I thought the connection to Ian Beale was bad!!!

If you want something similar but not so dated how about Cian?

florascotia · 08/02/2014 22:27

Actor Iain Glen = a more dashing counter-image to 40-year old IT weasel, perhaps?

Iain = Gaelic for 'John'. There are several more international versions of 'John', such as Jan, Yann, Ivan, Evan, Eoin, Ifan, Jens, Jonas, Johan etc etc...

Wishfulmakeupping · 08/02/2014 22:29

*Will he be born a 40 year old IT consultant?

No, then*
Best comment on name thread ever :)

Yama · 08/02/2014 22:31

I know a dog called Ian.

BoyMeetsWorld · 08/02/2014 22:34

I knew a fantastic Ian nn Yan. Super cool, very popular. A million miles away from geeky IT tech. In wales, perfectly acceptable name

I think flora or george are good dog names

Mogz · 08/02/2014 22:39

My BIL is Ian and he is very sweet, quiet and kind.

ravenAK · 08/02/2014 22:47

My dd2 insisted her two best friends when she started nursery were Ian & Caroline.

For several weeks, we were convinced she'd either fallen through a wormhole & we were sending her to nursery in 1973, or she'd muddled them with a couple we're friendly with who ARE called Caroline & Ian, but nursery-Caroline was real. Nursery-Ian turned out to be Ifan, though...

Friend-Ian is indeed a 40yo IT consultant, but he's lovely! Wink.

I quite like it as a name. Down-to-earth & no-nonsense. Slightly prefer Iain spelling.

TiggyOBE · 08/02/2014 22:55

The larger Krankie is called Ian.

ZenNudist · 08/02/2014 23:35

Iain sort of ok if you're Scottish
Hate Ian
Kian maybe ok
Prefer ciaran, that's a nice name

SadFreak · 08/02/2014 23:39

Not keen but it is unusual for babys these days so I can kind of see the attraction. All the Ians I know are 40 or above. I doubt there would be many othe rIans at school with him,.

Its not an offensive name by any means. Its not going to jaw drops and pearl clutching so if you like it go for it.

shootingstar1234 · 08/02/2014 23:48

I have nothing against the name however I just can't imagine a baby/child/teen called Ian. Which is strange really as the adult Ian's weren't born adults!

WaxyDaisy · 08/02/2014 23:52

Really not, it's vile. Norbert is better.

BigfootFiles · 08/02/2014 23:54

Ian Somerhalder.

If you ladies are eschewing him due to his name, I'll happily take him home...

Marcipex · 08/02/2014 23:56

Iain is nicer spelling.

hoppinghare · 08/02/2014 23:56

I love it.

This peep show clip sums it up for me Grin

Sorry...

intheround · 08/02/2014 23:59

I'd spell it Iain too.

NadiaWadia · 09/02/2014 00:44

It's fine. Certainly better than Arthur and Wilf, etc.

HopeS01 · 09/02/2014 08:30

Sorry, I really don't like it.
Definitely not "old man" in either a cutesy or traditional way.
It immediately makes me think of someone very boring

I'm sorry again

DuchessofKirkcaldy · 09/02/2014 08:35

I know an 8 year old Ian. Wasn't sure at first but it really suits him now.
If you like it then go for it. People will quickly get used to it.
