curiousgeorgie · 06/02/2014 13:37

My friends are having a girl and like Madeleine, nn Maddie, and asked our opinion.

I love it, but they're worried about its usability because of mm. I said I could start a thread about it..

Their surname starts with Mc too Confused mcF-

Opinions?

No sorry I wouldn't. The Mc is too close.

bellablot · 07/02/2014 16:36

What about Madison shortened to Maddie?

PenguinsDontEatKale · 07/02/2014 16:47

I wouldn't normally think it was an issue, but with a 'Mc' surname, yes, too close for me.

It wouldn't bother me. McCann is pronounced M'Cann anyway so doesn't sound similar to a name with the Mac pronounced in full as in McFadden, for example.

DD has that name, and no one has ever referenced mm. It needs to used, it doesn't have negative connotations to me.

Viviennemary · 07/02/2014 17:41

I personally wouldn't use the name. But I suppose it's up to the individual.

RunRabbit · 08/02/2014 03:30

MM isn't going to be news forever.

If you love the name use it.

Whenever I hear the name the first thing I think of is the book/cartoon Madeline.

JapaneseMargaret · 08/02/2014 05:31

It's a lovely name, I wouldn't not use it due to the one negative association.

Besides, it won't take any time at all for people's Madeleine association to be your DD rather than anything else.

Viviennemary · 08/02/2014 17:03

Yes I agree. If I knew a child called Madeleine I wouldn't associate her with any kind of negativity. It's just when I think of the name
Madeleine I think of that because I don't know any others. But if I did I wouldn't. Hope that makes some kind of sense!

LizLemonOnskerAtGaTilKobenhavn · 08/02/2014 19:26

oh dear no, Maddie Mc ........... no.

What about Magaly or Marianne or Margot Mc....

OpalQuartz · 08/02/2014 19:35

Is April out of bounds for the same reason? I like the name April and wouldn't have avoided it for that reason, although maybe it's different because MM has been in the news for a longer period?

littlebluedog12 · 08/02/2014 19:42

I would still use it. But then my DD also has a name which some on MN said they wouldn't use because of a high profile case. It's silly- people still use Holly and Jessica despite the awful Soham case, Ben despite the Ben Needham case, they still use Millie despite the Millie Dowler case. Whatever the name, I am sure if you looked hard enough you could find something to put you off.

OpalQuartz · 08/02/2014 19:45

Yes that's true. Rose is still used a lot in spite of Rose West

LizLemonOnskerAtGaTilKobenhavn · 08/02/2014 19:48

But Rose was an adult when she became infamous. Ditto Fred.

Little Freds and Little Roses don't make people think of Rose and Fred west. Wouldn't use them for siblings though!

OpalQuartz · 08/02/2014 20:15

What about the children's names mentioned other than Maddie?

OpalQuartz · 08/02/2014 20:16

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 08/02/2014 20:21

I haven't heard of Magaly before.

notso · 08/02/2014 20:33

I don't see the issue. It only seems to be Maddie people say this for not James for example.

LizLemonOnskerAtGaTilKobenhavn · 08/02/2014 21:16

Magaly french too. Saints name. Not uncommon in catholic/european countries.

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 09/02/2014 09:23

I'm a Maddie :) I'd just started secondary school when MM went missing - a couple of lads made comments about 'I've found Maddie', but most people took a really dim view of that and they stopped very quickly. I think anyone who commented would be told straight away that their comments are in bad taste. If the surname isn't "McCann" - even if it is a "Mc" - I don't think the MM reference would even register with me. Then again that may be because I'd be thrilled to see another Maddie Grin

If we stopped using the name of every child who went missing, we'd have a very limited choice.

PotatoPolly · 09/02/2014 09:29

Our best friends have a 4.5year old called Maddie, not short for anything, & I don't think it's ever been a problem Smile
