I really like a girls name but have dismissed it as coupled with DH's name it would make the name of a famous book. My DH has a very difficult and rare surname and I think using a girls name like the book will be too much. At dinner on Saturday someone brought up the name and I confessed I did love it but it was not on the list because of the connection, they all thought I was mad and should use it as 'it would be funny'Hmm. DH now sadly all for it so am now wondering if I am too unreasonable.

So basically if your surname was Eyre would you call you little girl Jane?
Or if your surname was Potter would you call your girl Harriet, or boy Harry?

NB. These are not the names!

Think it must be Tess d'urberville, I got nosy and googled roman Polanski films, that's the only one with a girls name as the title.

Seriously don't do it!

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/01/2014 21:24

Noooo!

I know of a Robin Williams and Michael Jackson.

Both of an age with their famous name sharers so not named after them. Even so, booking a table at a restaurant has been a lifelong pain in the arse.

Whoops x post!

I don't like Kimberley - I think with a "fancy" surname like d'urberville, you want a reasonably simple/straightforward first name.

Shallishanti · 27/01/2014 21:30

tbh, with that surname I would be thinking Tess anyway, and as everyone has said it's such a poor omen..

YoHoHoandabottleofWine · 27/01/2014 22:20

You need a really fabulous (and probably short) name to go with that surname - what else is on your list?

Bankholidaybaby · 28/01/2014 02:08

Felicity
Emma
Eleanor
Kit
Lucy

NigellasDealer · 28/01/2014 02:10

de Turberville

Bankholidaybaby · 28/01/2014 02:10

They sound good with your surname. I would stay away from Jess, Beth and anything else sibilant, as people will recall Tess.

NadiaWadia · 28/01/2014 02:49

So d'Urberville is an actual real surname? Fantastic!

Sorry OP but you really can't have Tess (which is a lovely name) - the combination is just too well known.

I went to college with Charles dickens. He suffered.

Arkina · 28/01/2014 03:08

Someone I Know insisted on calling her son Ryan despite a surname of Aire.

My aunt was called Betty Davis before she got married, and her cousin was too. They were out on a double date one night when the car they were in was stopped by the cops. This was in Northern Ireland in the 70s so being stopped by the cops or army happened quite a lot. They shone a torch into the car and asked for names, when both women gave their names as Betty Davis the cops obviously thought they were taking the piss and they almost spent th night in the cells. So, yeah, dont do it!

I went to school with a Jeremy Fisher who got teased mercilessly because of his name not sure what his parents were thinking .
My father knew of a Dr Donald Duck although he would have been named long before Disney's creation appeared on the scene .
The new Church of Ireland archbishop of Dublin is called Michael Jackson which must cause some comment.
as others have said i think Tess with the surname D'Urbeville would be asking for trouble .

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 28/01/2014 10:37

Maybe if she'd lived happily I'd say yes.

liquidstate · 28/01/2014 10:43

I have always insisted on short classic names like Emma, Rose, Sarah, Anne etc. I think DH understands and he does like Emma a lot but he did ask me what I thought of Amanda Confused. Its going to be a long pregnancy I think.

We have 22 weeks to argue over it and haven't even started on boys names yet Grin

Your last name is divine! Almost anything would sound wonderful with it. I think your instinct to go with short, classic names is a good one, though - they would set-off the surname beautifully. Oh and I went to school with a Jennifer Lopez, right at the height of J. Lo's popularity, poor thing.

SanityClause · 28/01/2014 15:05

Tess's surname was Darbyfield.

SanityClause · 28/01/2014 15:06

If you call your DD Emma, that will be the name of a book!

MrsOakenshield · 28/01/2014 15:20

Tess's surname was Darbyfield.

actually, it was Durbeyfield

squoosh · 28/01/2014 15:23

I saw a woman on the telly once who was called Monica Lewinsky except she wasn't that Monica Lewinsky.
