Lughaidh William....

Pron. is 'Loo-ee'

DH is Irish and I am Scottish, but we live overseas. The poor boy would forever have to be explaining the spelling.....wouldn't he?

No, no, no, no. It just looks ridiculous - sorry, but it does.

Hahaha, now I've noticed the 'lug head' bit too. Sorry, but Louis would be much nicer imo. Poor kid would have a life full of misspellings (trust me, I'm a Haley in a sea of Hailey's and Hayley's...), it's not fun.

Gaelic names work in Gaelic speaking countries. It will go so wrong for your little guy. It will just be a nightmare and so annoying ALWAYS having to spell out and correct his name. Make life easy on him. Either live in Ireland, where his name will be appreciated or give him this Gaelic name as a middle name. I'd steer clear of it as a first name though, that's just me.

He will not get called lug head. That is an adult idea. Laugh aid his a great name, let him spell it the English way when he wants to and write it the official way on official docs Loads of kids in schools have their names on school records as xxxxx xxxx (known as Tom)

Sweetishdelight · 27/01/2014 21:04

Lughaidh. Spell check did it

RightInTheKisser · 27/01/2014 21:06

I could look at that name all day long and not get Louis!

OutragedFromLeeds · 27/01/2014 21:08

Laugh aid is better than Lug head.

And think about when he grows up, gets a job and has [email protected] as his work e-mail, trying to spell for a French client (for example). DH works on the computer and has e-mails from all types of names, often he can't tell if they're male/female and gets a surprise on the phone!

I have a friend with a normal surname which is rendered unpronouncablewhete we live (Spain). So, Buchanan has become boo-cha-nan. Her first name sounds hilarious, but I won't out her.

googietheegg · 27/01/2014 21:15

It'd be really annoying giving his email address over the phone ...

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/01/2014 21:21

I'm a big fan of using names from my own culture (Welsh) and feel the same about other people using names from their own. I'm usually very quick to say "ignore the culturally ignorant who can't see beyond Charles and Charlotte", however I think this one is a bit too difficult to be workable.
