Can Zac be short for Isaac?

I really like the name Zac but not as keen on the longer versions like Zachariah or Zachary. Can Zac be short for Isaac without people questioning it? I think it can but DH just isn't sure. Middle name will be Adam.

I'd say yes. If my niece had been a boy she would have been Isaac shortened to Zac.

Innogen · 27/01/2014 00:48

I think people will assume Zachary or the like to be honest. Isaac will take people by surprise, but once you have explained it, it will be fine.

BikeRunSki · 27/01/2014 01:00

Yes
I know one

looki · 27/01/2014 01:50

Yes!

undecidedanduncertain · 27/01/2014 02:04

Yes - I think that is fairly standard tbh

yellowrose2728 · 27/01/2014 02:07

I have a Zac. Not Zachary or Zacharius...just plain ol' Zac Smile

ToffeeJungle · 27/01/2014 12:06

I was going to suggest just Zac too, lovely name!

I have heard of Zac being short for Isaac though I would always presume Zachary in the first instance (or just Zac as a name in it's own right).
The 'saac' in Isaac isn't actually pronounced the same as Zac either - it's more I-zuck than I-Zac.

SS3J · 27/01/2014 12:27

Yes definitely, although unless you call him Zac right from the start and always introduce him as that then another short form might take hold. I think my parents intended Zac to be my brother's nickname when they called him Isaac, but he has been Ike for a long time!

HeinousPieTrap · 27/01/2014 12:29

Yes, I know a Zak Isaac too. I think it's just fine.

Clr2014 · 27/01/2014 16:34

Yes, I know one and I would happily use it if had a ds.

miffybun73 · 27/01/2014 19:40

Yes, definitely.

Ihatepeas · 29/01/2014 13:04

Yep I know one.

jellybeans · 29/01/2014 13:06

I know one but wouldn't have thought it was a shortening before hearing that has has a different letter (i know lots of names do) and I always thought the 'zac' part in Isaac was more of a 'zuck' than a 'zack' sound but i may be wrong. Why not just go with Zac. Most people do these days looking at the baby name stats.

WheresMyCow · 29/01/2014 13:08

Yes.

We have an Isaac and we always intended to call him Zac as a nickname. TBH he has never been called that but would have no objections if anyone did.

Panzee · 29/01/2014 13:09

I know a few. These days I would assume Isaac before Zachary etc.

woodrunner · 29/01/2014 13:13

Yes, though I'd probably spell it Izaak, like Izaak Newton, so the shortening makes more sense. Gorgeous name - both long and short versions.

OutragedFromLeeds · 29/01/2014 13:17

Yep, it's nice.

Ilovekittyelise · 29/01/2014 13:45

yes definitely.

i like the name isaac but husband wanted it shortened to ike rather than zac. whilst i hate the whole "named after" thing, ike turner just too negative a connotation!

peacypops · 03/02/2014 20:23

We have an Isaac and I would never have thought to shorten it to Zac as to me the sound is quite different. And it was definitely Isaac Newton not Izaak! No reason not to shorten it to that though.
