I really love this name & would without doubt pick it for my dc BUT im petrified about the raised eyebrows that may occur when we announce the name as when I've mentioned it in passing in the past a few people have thought it was bizarre... Please tell me what would YOU think if a member of your family announced the name Cooper for their new baby?

It's ok - not offensive.

jamtoast12 · 17/01/2014 14:48

Ok but surname needs to be seriously considered.

nicename · 17/01/2014 14:51

Id wonder if it was a boy or girl. I usually wonder if a surname used as a first name is a 'family' name.

Or as Niles in Frazier says "Where are you getting these (names), the Big Book of Medieval Professions?"

ChristineDaae · 17/01/2014 14:53

I love it

stinkingbishop · 17/01/2014 14:54

I like it. I think one of the advantages of surnames as first is that they're quirky without being 'out there' because we've all heard them before but in a different context.

I know a little girl called Mackenzie and it really works.

But I do think he'd need a monosyllabic surname.

grizzabellia · 17/01/2014 14:56

I don't like it personally, or surnames as first names in general. But I don't think it is weird. It isn't very common here but I think it is one of the most popular names in Australia currently (have some relatives there with a baby Cooper, and I think there is another in their extended family.) So it will probably get more known here as well.

squoosh · 17/01/2014 14:59

I'd think they'd been watching American TV. I'm not a huge fan of surnames as first names but it's fine, hardly eyebrow raising.

CoffeeandNumbers · 17/01/2014 15:17

I'm not keen. I think of the annoying doctor "Coop" off Nurse Jackie.
And I think "Cooper Pooper" will be shouted across the playground at some point in this child's life. sorry.

Northumberlandlass · 17/01/2014 15:18

i don't mind it. Reminds me of Twin Peaks.

Theonlyoneiknow · 17/01/2014 15:20

I like it, I know of one (boy)

I really like surnames as first names

darlingred · 17/01/2014 15:23

I know a little boy called Cooper. I like it. It's different but not offensive.

Sammie101 · 17/01/2014 15:25

I would think it was very American. However you may well be American so who knows! Not massively keen on it though

Frontdoorstep · 17/01/2014 15:50

It's not my favourite, but it's ok, inoffensive, easy enough to spell and pronounce, I would probably get used to it.

wetaugust · 17/01/2014 22:48

Barrel-maker.

DramaAlpaca · 17/01/2014 22:54

Not keen, but then I usually don't like surnames used as first names.

Viviennemary · 17/01/2014 22:58

It's totally and absolutely dire. It sounds like a grocer's shop.

Rosencrantz · 17/01/2014 22:58

I usually really like surnamey names, but cooper doesn't sit right for me.
No real reason, I just don't like it.

Floggingmolly · 17/01/2014 23:00

Yes, it means barrel maker, nicename
I can't understand contemplating choosing a name for your child that makes you petrified of the raised eyebrows it will cause?
Your child has to go through his whole life introducing himself as whatever name you give him. Don't give him Cooper.

squoosh · 17/01/2014 23:03

I've changed my mind, you should definitely use it if you love it. Feck what anyone thinks. It's 1000 times better than Wilfred which is almost universally adored on MN for some bizarre reason.

BikeRunSki · 17/01/2014 23:08

If someone in my family said they had called their child Cooper, I'd wonder if they couldn't have been a little more imaginative that calling the baby Cooper Cooper.

ashtrayheart · 17/01/2014 23:10

Awful, but I'm not a fan of surname first names.

Rhubarbgarden · 17/01/2014 23:17

I really don't like it.

PixelAteMyFace · 17/01/2014 23:22

I'm not keen on surnames as first names, and I also think it can be confusing.

My DH's surname can also be a first name, which often causes confusion if his name has to be put in alphabetical order in a list as people sometimes inverse them

fridayfreedom · 17/01/2014 23:27

First thing that came to mind is ' mini cooper' sorry

MaeWestfield · 17/01/2014 23:30

Barrel maker .

Agree with squoosh. Id think "was there a cooper on one tree hill?".

Daft.
