Marie pronounced Marry... and some more names

DD is due in 8 weeks and I need a name. She'll be little sis to Amos.

My DGM's best friend, who is lovely, is called Marie pronounced Marry. I also like the nod to to Marie Curie and Marie Stopes 'cos I'm a bit of a feminist. BUT, would she spend her life saying 'no it's not Muhree, it's Marry'?

Other names I like are Sylvia, Iris (but I'm worried it's heading for the top 20) and Esther (although I work in chemistry so the last one could be wierd). As well as your opinions on Marie, hit me with some more suggestions!

Welsh Mali rhymes with Sally.

Algorithm · 23/01/2014 10:29

I am debating whether I'd rhyme it with Sally or go for 'Marley' but I know that my parents would pronounce it as rhyming with Sally. Apparently I have always pronounced my 'ah's like a 'posh twit' Hmm.

Honestly if I had to pronounce the name from reading I'd ask the person :p

How is the country Mali pronounced?

April13 · 23/01/2014 15:06

Mhairi - the "MH" makes the V, and is therefore Varry.
Mairi - H dropped therefore marry

sorry, tuppence worth here, as a Scot who actually has one of these names :)

mathanxiety · 23/01/2014 15:48

Mhairi is the vocative case of Mairi.

Mairi is the nominative case of the name, and the one that should appear on the BC.

The vocative case is the form of the noun you would use when you call your daughter Mairi in for dinner. Your sentence would begin with 'A Mhairi...' (pronounced 'A Vari..')

If she returned home and started eating and the phone rang, you would tell her friend on the other end that Mairi was eating her dinner and would call back. You would use the nominative case of the name in that sentence (just Mairi, pronounced Mari).

Names, like other nouns, change according to case in Scots Gaelic (and Irish).

x-post..

Was going to suggest Maris or Marit but Gloria is really lovely. Maybe Marie as a middle name, pronounced as you want to (Marry)

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 23/01/2014 18:03

Mari is the Welsh version :)

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 23/01/2014 18:04

And 'Mali' rhymes with Sally. There's a Welsh cartoon called Sali Mali.

"marrie" like "carrie" - just a thought

Northumberlandlass · 23/01/2014 18:12

Never in my life have I seen a thread with my name on! Sorry, if I'm late to the party....

i'm a Mari Smile All the scottish people I know pronounce it 'Marry' but my parents said 'Marr ri' (does that make sense?)

Sillybillybob · 23/01/2014 18:13

Mali the country is pronounced "Marley"

addictedtosugar · 23/01/2014 19:12

Northumberlandlass,

If you live where your username suggests, there is a 3 year old Mari living less than 50 miles from you!

ProfondoRosso · 23/01/2014 19:22

Perhaps people would be more likely to know it was pronounced Marry if you gave her 2 first names, with a hyphen? That's more common in France these days than just Marie. Most folk know how to pronounce Marie-Claire in the UK.

Like Marie-Helene, Marie-Cecile, Marie-Therese

Northumberlandlass · 23/01/2014 20:32

Blooming Heck Addicted that's crazy ! There is a NE crime writer called 'Mari', we follow each other on twitter just because we have the same name! Smile

addictedtosugar · 23/01/2014 20:59

Think this one might be a while off twitter, but that makes 3 of you in the NE.
Sorry, your not as unique as you thought.
