Can we use Willow with this surname?

I dont want to post the whole surname but its 2 syllables and starts with O'S... DD due in 2 weeks and we are really stuck for any other name we like as well. We both love Willow. However I'm a bit concerned that the 'o' sound at the beginning of the last name and end of the first name will sound odd. What do people think?

I think it is a bit awkward, starting a surname with the same vowel the first name ends on. I'd be more worried, though, about the possibility of young Willow being not very willowy - ie a bit more substantial.

MoDiddly · 15/01/2014 22:03

I know a Leo O'xxx. It's not easy to say so I don't think I would - and if there ends up being another Willow in her age group, she'd be Willowo.

Winterwobbles · 15/01/2014 22:09

Yes,we have considered that too TheGirlOnTheLanding. Hoping that as both DH and I are on the tall skinny side that she'll inherit our genes though it is a bit of a risk of course!

Hadnt thought about the Willow O problem - that sounds even worse. Oh dear.

Sorry, the combination doesn't really work because of the repeated 'oh' sound.

Starballbunny · 15/01/2014 22:21

I'd say it Wil low O'S and so it doesn't sound odd at all.

Mrsindecision · 15/01/2014 22:25

I think it sounds absolutely fine - don't overthink it!

Winterwobbles · 15/01/2014 22:27

I think it does depend on how you say it a bit or at least thats what DH insists
Ie Willow, slight pause, O'S... sounds fine but said more quickly you get Wil-oh-oh-S... which is indeed awkward.

But, we've been through every name in the top 1000 and can't agree on anything else Confused

Think I might need to adopt your username Mrsindecision :)

How about Rowan, similar theme.

justhayley · 17/01/2014 10:07

Its a beautiful name. Will you have a middle name? Then when saying the full name just pop in the middle name as well - problem solved Grin

RoseHoney · 17/01/2014 10:37

I'm not one to usually suggest this as I tend to not like it but could you double barrel it?
Willow-May? Or actually if your surname is what I think it is that really won't work.
Willow Rose?

newyearhere · 17/01/2014 13:01

Willow is a lovely name but agree it's awkward to say with a surname starting with O.

notso · 17/01/2014 13:17

My surname starts with O and we ruled out Theo and Willow. Two names I loved.

Wallpaper123 · 17/01/2014 13:28

Sadly as willow is so lovely, the o's bit makes it sound a bit comic.

NigellasDealer · 17/01/2014 13:31

I know a Leo O'Something and find it v hard to say.....
what RoseHoney suggested, willow-may O' has more potential for piss-taking!

Solo · 17/01/2014 13:42

I wouldn't and I have a Willow. With my surname one person did suggest it would be odd, but it isn't and it doesn't begin with an O. Also, my Willow is tall and willowy and suits her name perfectly. If she was even a bit chubby, it would seem ridiculous :( and really not suit her.

cakebar · 17/01/2014 13:53

I clicked on this wondering if you were going to say your surname was tree.

I think it would be ok actually.

Solo · 17/01/2014 13:56

If you google the name, if it's what I think it might be, there are none listed. Maybe people generally think it's 'not right.'

RunnerHasbeen · 17/01/2014 13:59

Willa would flow more easily?

Solo · 17/01/2014 14:01

Not even on fb.

newyearhere · 17/01/2014 14:02

Probably a long shot, but would it be acceptable to add another part to the surname, e.g. a family name so it's Willow Smith O'Something?

Frontdoorstep · 17/01/2014 16:00

I think it sounds fine tbh.
