Great - if you're Spanish.

mumof2aimingfor4 · 15/01/2014 17:53

Not really relevant as we live in the multi cultural big city of London.

I like it, unusual but not weird Smile

2014newme · 15/01/2014 17:54

Agree is fine if Spanish. Although does remind me of mateus rose wine

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/01/2014 17:56

I know a Mateo. He's of vaguely Spanish descent but only vaguely and it suits him very well.

GimmeDaBoobehz · 15/01/2014 18:07

I don't mind it.

I think it's also used it Italy but perhaps spelt Matteo as my Italian friend (well his Dad is Italian, so he's half Italian)'s little brother is called Matteo.

Hulababy · 15/01/2014 18:08

I know a 6yo Matteo - his father is Italian.

SantanaLopez · 15/01/2014 18:09

If you're not Mediterranean, it's silly. No matter where you live.

Its0kToBeMe · 15/01/2014 18:14

I have a nephew in argentina called Matias. I love it

2kidsintow · 15/01/2014 18:16

There's a Mateo in my DD's school. His Dad is mediterranean but his Mum isn't.

bumbumsmummy · 15/01/2014 18:19

Halle berry called her little boy it so you can guarantee there will be more

ZenNudist · 15/01/2014 18:25

I know a mateo but he is Spanish. It's a daft name if you aren't Spanish.

How about Matthew? Smile
Or Matthias (not keen but it fits the bill)

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 15/01/2014 19:01

By that notion, you shouldn't have Sophia if you aren't Greek, or Charlotte if you aren't French/Old German, or Dylan if you aren't Welsh, or Liam if you aren't Irish.

People can name their babies whatever they want; they don't have to be from that particular country or origin - if everyone stuck to that rule, the names mentioned above wouldn't be in regular use today.

Starballbunny · 15/01/2014 19:07

Italian friends DS is Marteo, I like it, I don't think it causes any confusion.

mumof2aimingfor4 · 15/01/2014 19:11

Thank you for your input ladies. Especially moomin Wink

I'm going to have a Sophia and I've never even been to Greece! Woop woop Wink definitlies in solidarity

Ilovekittyelise · 15/01/2014 20:09

dont really agree to the comparisons drawn by moomin, whilst sophia is of greek descent etc, all the names quoted have been anglicised by years of use, whereas mateo is very much a spanish name not commonly used in the uk.

nothing wrong with that in itself just makes me think of those waiters you find in little pseudo french restaurants that lay on a thick accent and tell you they're called pierre. maybe im just a stickler for outdated social convention but similarly i feel like i cant call my son angus because im english.

if you actually like matthew but want to have something more different try and decide whats more important to you, liking a name that isnt spectacularly exciting, or having a unique name; thats not meant to sound negative i just cant phrase it well, everyones different (i love matthew fwiw!).

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 15/01/2014 20:13

Ilovekittyelise those names had to become anglicised somehow.

mumof2aimingfor4 · 15/01/2014 20:47

Ilove that is why we opted for Mateo. We wanted something different but I love the name Matthew as it is DP's middle name and his dads middle name. I have grown up having Gran Canaria as my second home hence Mateo. We had a short list but dd2 (age 3) has decided her brothers name will be Mateo now anyway.

Love it.

NadiaWadia · 15/01/2014 21:18

Agree with Moomin how do you think these names became anglicised - someone had to take the first plunge. In fact most of the names in common use in the UK have their origins elsewhere. Often names thought of as typically British are originally Hebrew (from the bible) like Daniel, Mary, Sarah, even Anne (comes from Hannah), Latin (eg Julia) or Greek (Katherine, George).

I agree with moomin, those names had to become anglicised somehow. Love the name Mateo :)
