I like the name Boe/Boden for a boy. I am aware via MN of the shop Boden although have never been in or seen it in RL.

How popular is this shop? Is it the first thing you think of upon hearing this name? I am late 20's and only know of this place from this site, is it for older women? I know none of my friends shop there but just trying to work out if this is something everyone else will associate the name with.

I also like Toby and Auden (although DH doesn't like Auden) so any suggestions along these lines would be appreciated! And any other names with Boe (not Beau) as a nickname.

Thanks for reading!

Yes it's a shop but then I've heard boys called Barclay and Oakley. I wouldn't personally but if you like it, then go for it. Especially if you've no knowledge of the brand.

Sorry - I don't think it's a good idea. Boden is a very well known brand - especially among people with children.

No poor child

MrsPatMustard · 16/01/2014 16:37

Instantly thought of the shop - it'd be like calling your kid 'Debenham'...

I am 27 and very familiar with Boden (so not just known by 'older' people -- though I don't really consider myself young nowadays!). It's very popular for children's clothes and is a growing brand, this almost certainly will be what the vast majority think of when they hear that as a name.

Auden is nice enough, I guess, but if a parent named their child that I would expect them to be pretty big fans of the poet.

I wouldn't although it is a lovely name. Go more up market, Harrod.

Our push-along dog on wheels is called Boden

Minty82 · 16/01/2014 19:42

Sorry, I wouldn't be able to stop myself mentally adding 'catalogue'. I've come across a couple of Bo's short for Robert - think that's a pretty established nn. And I'm another vote for Toby!

EirikurNoromaour · 16/01/2014 19:51

Bo is ok, Beau is tolerable, Boe is just bizarre. Why not call him Boseph and be done?
Bo is used as a standalone name by some hippies people.

Phaedra11 · 16/01/2014 19:57

You might not know anyone who shops at Boden now, but after you have your baby you are likely to meet many parents who do - it's very popular for children's clothes.

Toby is a lovely name.

A certain type of 30-something, posh middle class, holiday-in-France-and-eat-a-lot-of-goats-cheese mother shops at Boden. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT (before I get flamed) and I've bought stuff from them myself. But it's really a very small percentage of the population. The fact you and your friends haven't heard of it means the people you tell the name to WON'T instantly think of the shop, so it's not an issue.

Also, if you did start shopping there think of all the time you'd save by not needing to write out name tags for his clothes Grin

What about Baden? As in Powell. I know a Baden and he's lovely :-)

ZenNudist · 16/01/2014 20:41

Hello boden, meet my daughter asos

Phaedra11 · 16/01/2014 20:52

I hadn't heard of Boden before I had DS1 but when he was tiny, I went to a Parent and Toddler group where a mum brought in a Mini-Boden catalogue and everyone started cooing over the checked pull-up trousers etc. I couldn't afford to buy anything from the catalogue but I did become very aware of the company.

I think you can call your son Bo/Boe as a pet name without it being an obvious diminutive of his first name. I called DS2, Boo when he was a baby (can't remember why) even though his actual name has no Bs or Os in it!

I'd go for Toby and Bo.

mum2jakie · 16/01/2014 20:56

No - I've never shopped at Boden but it is an instantly recognisable brand name! It's the (slightly more upmarket) equivalent of calling your kid Argos or Ikea!
