We're a French family living in the UK and like the name Aline, how is it perceived and pronounced in English?

I've never heard of it before. I'd guess at it being pronounced 'ah-line'?

runningandjumping · 15/01/2014 10:21

In French, it is pronounced "ah-leen"

I think it is pretty.

There are several UK names where the 'ine' ending is pronounced 'een', such as Christine, Geraldine and Pauline, so I don't think anyone would find that part of the French pronunciation a problem. The initial 'A=Ah' sound is less usual for names in the UK, but I don't think it would be a problem.

In Scotland, we have similar names: Arlene (Ahr-leen), Aileen (Ay-leen), and Alayne (All-ain). You might find that just sometimes people confuse Aline with one of these, but none of them is very widely used at the moment.

florascotia · 15/01/2014 10:41

word 'either' missing after second 'problem'. Doh!

cutsnake · 15/01/2014 10:43

tbh it makes me think of an A-line skirt, although it is pretty in French.

BookroomRed · 15/01/2014 10:44

It's pretty. I'm a French speaker, so know how it is pronounced, but you may get people saying 'Aileen', if that bothers you...?

sooperdooper · 15/01/2014 10:47

My first thought on reading it was 'a line' (skirt) I do like the pronunciation but I think you'd struggle to get people in the UK to get that right initially

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/01/2014 10:49

I would have said it was Aileen but once corrected I'd know so people will learn. As long as you don't mind correcting them first time out.

Agree my first thought was an A-line skirt

badtime · 15/01/2014 16:58

I like 'Aline'.

It makes me think of the American actress from the early days of taking pictures called Aline MacMahon. I do think of it as a name from the late 19th/early 20th century, like Adeline and Ottoline.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 15/01/2014 17:02

Pronounced Ah-leen it is lovely. However, I would expect that you will have problems with people in the UK trying to call her A-line.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/01/2014 21:42

It is lovely but an English first language speaker would see A-line, as in the skirt first, more often than not. Which is a shame because it is pretty.

runningandjumping · 17/01/2014 09:56

I think Aline is a pretty and origninal name, as opposed to Alice, which is also pretty but much more popular in the UK

I misread it as airline, sorry!! But it's pretty.

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 17/01/2014 13:24

It is pretty, she would have to correct people a lot on the punctuation and spelling though.

EmpressOfTheWellOfLostPlots · 17/01/2014 13:25

Sorry - pronunciation!

WhiteHairReally · 17/01/2014 14:48

I taught an English Alina pronounced 'a-leena' with the emphasis on the second syllable.

jamtoast12 · 17/01/2014 14:51

Also read as 'a line' too
