How popular is it where you live? How many do you know and what ages??

I know its in the top 10 but wondering just how rife it is.. considering it since my old favourite Noah shot up from nowhere and is now everywhere.

Only thing is, I don't like Jake

Thanks!

Jacob is inevitably Jake in my experience (sorry) It seemed to be popular a few years ago, the Jacob/Jakes I know are in the 7-12 age range.

I really like Noah though. Its timeless and like 'Lily' will always be a lovely name, some names are popular because they are gorgeous!

lollydollydrop · 15/01/2014 00:25

Thankyou. I think Lily will actually be very easy to date, kind of like how Kylie and Jason became popular in 1984! And Noah is probably in that category too now, its become trendy rather than timeless

I have a 3 year old Jacob - he gets 'J' (from us and then others have picked up on it so wouldn't have to be the case) but never Jake. I have only met a couple of others and he has been the only one in his playgroup and nursery class.

Mim78 · 15/01/2014 11:20

I like Jacob - it was on my list at one stage and I did a couple of threads about it!

TeeBee · 15/01/2014 11:27

My son is a Jacob. He is J or JJ to us. I've never heard anyone call him Jake. I know two others, one at school, one elsewhere.

There are two Noah's at their school.

I think both names are lovely at end age - both lovely for old men IMO.

I love the name Jacob, think it is pretty popular though.
I know of 3 who live within a mile radius of each other - aged 9 mths, 18 mths and 5 years.

Noah is nice too, though not as nice. I only know of one aged 5.

I currently have 4 DS in primary school and one in playgroup and have only ever met one Jacob, a lovely fairly quiet boy and suits the name! Definielty prefer it to Noah and would never think of calling a Jacob jake! Just make it very clear you don't like it and people won't call him it, simple! My eldest is called William but i hate the nn Willy or Billy so no one calls him it and he only ever gets called Will which i do like!

squoosh · 15/01/2014 16:47

I know people say 'some names are popular because they're gorgeous'. That's not really true, they're popular because they're currently popular. People hear the name said so many times and then think 'hmmm, I like that'.

Jacob is very popular but won't date like something like Lily.

Mrsindecision · 15/01/2014 17:19

Some names are definitely more pleasing on the ear than others though, irrelevant of current tastes, and popular names are popular because they sound "gorgeous" to many at the time they were picked. I do agree however that doesn't mean that they will always sound "gorgeous" to future generations (or indeed to the older generation who may perceive current "trends" as dated to their ear). Fwiw, I really think you shouldn't get too bogged down with the popularity of a name, just choose one you love. It's worth remembering that even the most popular names are given to less than 1% of babies born.

I know one aged 2, he is never called Jake

justhayley · 17/01/2014 09:58

I'm Hertfordshire and there are loads of Jacobs around here under 2 years - all known as Jake. In my group of mum friends alone 3/5 boys are Jacobs.
I have a 21month old Noah. Had no idea it was popular when I named him - not sure it was yet then. On here iv read there are millions of them which really disappointed me as I wanted more timeless than trendy. Iv met a lot of people say oh my god sons/ uncles sons / neighbours sister etc is a Noah but to be honest iv never actually met one of any age. Still love the name - hope it never gets to number 1 in popularity & hoping the fact it's so well known biblical will put lots of people off!

If you really love Jacob use it & hope it's popularity puts everyone else off so your DS is the only one with it. Don't think you will avoid him being a Jake though.

justhayley · 17/01/2014 09:59

Ps isn't Jacob/Jake higher up the popularity list than Noah?

GingerPCatt · 17/01/2014 10:02

DS is Jacob and I occasionally meet an older one at parks etc but none his age. He's Jacob at nursery but if he decides to be Jake when he's at school that's ok.

curiousgeorgie · 17/01/2014 18:02

It's my surname, and because of that, I always look up when one is called in the doctor / park / supermarket / soft play...

There are bloody loads!! (Surrey)
