Alicia - multiple pronunciations...

I really like the name Alicia - pronounced "Al-Lissssss-Ia" like a childhood friend of mine but am worried that everyone would assume it's "Al-eeesh-a"?

I know a lot of people use alternative spellings, like, I guess, Alyssia? But I prefer more traditional looking names.

Should I just rule this one out? I have loved it since I was young - what would you do?

Difficult as I have always thought of that spelling being pronounced how you suggested BUT whenever I've encountered anyone with that spelling, I've been corrected that it's pronounced Alesha. I now have a niece with this spelling and a girl in DDs class who are both called Alicia but spell it Alicia.

Maybe use an alternate spelling, like Alissia or use it as a middle name? I don't think it's that much of hardship to tell people the way you want it pronounced, but I know some see that as a real no no.

I pronounce Alicia as Alice-eee-a. Not Aleesha.

Love the name, always have done but I have a friend with that name so can't use it!

Just tell people how its pronounced.

gruffalosfriend · 13/01/2014 14:42

I know one who goes by Al-EESH-a. There is no 'correct' pronunciation imo, but people will hopefully go along with your preferred one.

Lots of names are like this, really.
Depends how much it bothers you to have to always explain.
Uh-LEE-shuh would be my assumption if you didn't say.

lljkk · 13/01/2014 14:44

ps: and I'm a numpty. So I would get it wrong sometimes regardless of what you said. Not because I'm trying to annoy you but because I have a memory like a sieve or might get confused with how other people said it. Do you have the patience for numpties?

brunette123 · 13/01/2014 14:45

Yes I would pronounce it as Alice-eee-a too. Aleeesha - didn't that seem to start with Alicia Keys - never heard it prounounced like that till she emerged?

Alice-eeee-a such a pretty name lovely

curlew · 13/01/2014 14:47

The correct pronunciation is Alice-eeya. But it's usually pronounced wrongly nowadays-sadly perhaps best avoided?

lljkk · 13/01/2014 17:20

Correct according to who?! Sheesh.
Uh-lee-shuh is only pronunciation I grew up with in 1970s America.

I have no idea who or what Alicia Keys is.

newyearhere · 13/01/2014 19:26

Just tell people the name and they should remember. In this country it would normally be A-liss-ee-a.

Oriunda · 13/01/2014 19:53

Alisha is how I'd pronounce it

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/01/2014 21:14

A-liss-ee-ah.

Aleesha is wrong, in the UK at least.

I know someone names Elyssia. So called because her mother didn't want people ever calling her A-Lee-sha.

annielosthergun · 14/01/2014 00:46

Thanks! I was wondering if I was just 'wrong'! I am ok with correcting people as long as they (well most, at least) don't just think I am 'making up ' my version. Feeling better...

But remember that judging by this thread she will be correcting people all her life. Which is boring.
