When it comes to childrens names, can a name be cruel?
Trying to decide on a name for our baby, and came across Aubrey Willow as the name for a girl. I always thought Aubrey was a boys name? So can the name you choose be cruel to your unborn child?
I am trying to think ahead when they start school, after all other children can bully over names.

mousey, I'm guessing your DD is called Shea and not Yankee? Wink

OryxCrake · 13/01/2014 21:12

The only Aubrey I know is an elderly man (UK). It's a lovely name, and due a revival, but I've never heard of it being used for girls before.

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/01/2014 21:15

I know Aubrey is very popular for girls in the USA but have never heard it used for girls in the UK.

Le Cock is a cruel middle name, IMO.

I don't know anyone who has it as a first name, though.

I think the cruel ones are the ones where parents try to attribute certain qualities such as Genius, Perfecta, Attracta, Adonis etc Way too much pressure. Although I've only seen these in the baby name books and don't actually know anybody with these names.

If someone living in or planning to move to Scotland called their child Joby, that would be very stupid cruel.

Why? Does it sound like jobby and is slang for something? Confused

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/01/2014 21:39

ilove

It's slang for poo in Scotland.

nevergoogle · 13/01/2014 21:44

Ned and Jakey are also not good in Scotland.

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/01/2014 21:45

What's jackey mean in Scotland?

I know back in erm...the 16th century "the jakes" meant the toilet. Put me off the name Jacob somewhat, given the inevitable nickname. Most people might not know but I do now.

nevergoogle · 13/01/2014 21:49

Jakey definition from urban dictionary.

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/01/2014 21:55

Oh dear!

badtime · 13/01/2014 22:35

nevergoogle, 'Attracta' is nothing to do with being attractive, it is the Latin name of an Irish saint.

nevergoogle · 13/01/2014 22:38

oh ok, i think many would assume it was to do with being attractive though.

ProfondoRosso · 14/01/2014 07:28

A pal of mine from Enniskillen went to school with a girl called Attracta Farmer. Allegedly.

squoosh · 14/01/2014 10:17

Alisvolatpropiis In Dublin 'jacks' is the term for toilet, not exactly a polite term either, equivalent to 'bog'. It comes from the much older 'jakes'.

Grim is a scandinavian name, sad when adults are ignorant about others name choices!

Also think that when it comes to school age - either they get bullied or they don't. Name, clothes, hair, size, family, location, voice, skin, anything can be used. They might end up as the 'cool kid' with the unusual name. You can't control it.

SashaOfSiberia · 15/01/2014 10:49

I think the only ignorance is on the parents part. If you plan to raise a child in a country or language where a name has strongly negative connotations, it is shortsighted to think that the cultural history of that name will matter.

Prik was a name I encountered in Thailand and Randy is popular in America, regardless of how well they work in other countries or languages they wouldn't work in the UK. It doesn't mean that all names from different cultures shouldn't be allowed, but names which clearly don't work in the country of residence shouldn't be used.

MrsPatMustard · 16/01/2014 16:41

I've always liked the name Virginia but steered away from it because i could mentally hear the teenagers nicknaming my child 'virgin' all the way through secondary school....

icingmyback · 16/01/2014 16:49

agree with sasha an italian friend of mine was absolutely horrified that i considered calling my ds ben because in italy it's a name everyone associates with mussolini.
