Names that go with a surname beginning with S

Our surname is SO hard to find names that work - everything ends up sounding really sibilant or as though there is a glottal stop.

I also prefer mainstream traditional names rather than anything too unusual or 'trendy'. I already have a son called Joe.

For a girl I'd like either Olivia, Eva, Rachel, Rebecca or Anna. Although - is Eva too popular now or is it classic enough? And would Anna sound odd with a brother called Joe? Ie Joe and Anna sounds like Joanna!

Or for a boy I like Tom, Samuel, Daniel. I also do like Harry and Charlie but they've been done to death a bit.

Any more ideas from you lovely ladies?

I love the name Joe for a boy. I have to say that I know 5 little Evas....I love Rebecca...and also Anna....tonnes of Olivias here!

hackneybird · 12/01/2014 23:06

Yes, Eva is so very very popular.

Olivia very common but in a classic way. Oh it's so difficult!

Where are you Maureen? Have to say 5 Evas, that's loads! I know 4 Finlays, another name of our time.

Hackney I am in Cheshire and I know three Finleys...

MummyBeerest · 12/01/2014 23:11

Rebecca is really pretty.

Theonlyoneiknow · 12/01/2014 23:13

I don't know any Evas! I think Anna and Joe sound lovely together. It's my favourite from your girls list, followed by Rachel (or Rachael as it is spelt in Scotland!)

I know a Joe and Max sibset

MummyBeerest · 12/01/2014 23:15

Oh, and meant to ask-how popular is the name Olive where you are?

hackneybird · 13/01/2014 08:18

I've never heard Olive. Interesting suggestion.

Anyone got any ideas for names that work with a surname beginning with S?

I have a surname beginning with S.

Have Lucy, Tom and Joe.

Wanted to avoid names with S in. I have a lisp!

Pooka · 13/01/2014 08:30

What about Helena.

hackneybird · 13/01/2014 18:51

Annoyingly someone nasty I went to school with is called Helena (she used to be called Helen but has changed it) [hmmm]. It's one of those nice names that has been ruined for me.

Surnames beginning with S are hard work aren't they?

That's a shame - it's one of my favourite names.

What about Lydia? Or Nancy? Caroline? Laura? I also rather like Mary. Don't know any round my neck of the woods, although a cousin has a baby Mary. Actually - prob not with Joe (particularly if Joseph) Grin

Boy's names are much harder. I liked Christopher, but wanted to avoid potential for Chris. Kit?

Obviously am keen on Tom. :) have been surprised by how few I've come across since ds1 started school. Fwiw he is just Tom, not Thomas. Sam I think would still work with S surname. William? Edward? Oliver?

Rhubarbgarden · 13/01/2014 20:05

I love Anna. How about Hannah if you want to avoid the Joanna thing?

We have an S surname. I thought names ending with an N sound sounded nice with it - Simone, Fern, Nadine.

hackneybird · 13/01/2014 21:09

pooka I LOVE the name Tom. I think it travels really well.

I like all of your boy suggestions actually. I do like Billy for a boy. Or girl, for that matter.

Pooka · 13/01/2014 21:57

I really like Billy too. :)

Butterfly82 · 13/01/2014 22:06

What about Annie then you don't have the Joanne problem.
