Tor / Helga

Swedish mum and Scottish dad. We live in Scotland permanently and would like to give DC (due in May) a Swedish/Scandinavian name that works in English. If it is a boy we are quite keen on Tor, Helga for a girl. Would like more suggestions! Big brother is called Axel. Surname starts with S so I'd like to avoid names ending in s (love Otis and Agnes otherwise).

i dont like Helga it just doesnt soudn right for me (Danish oriiginally here)

Agnes is sweet and Tor is ok I love Otis

TalkativeJim · 10/01/2014 18:14

I know it's not Swedish but Ragnar? Similar to Ranald and Magnus which are both popular in Scotland and VERY COOL.

Girls - Annika shortened to Annie, which is also a fine Scotswoman's name?

florascotia · 10/01/2014 19:40

'Torr' = 'little hill' in Scottish Gaelic, but, as I'm sure you know, geographical names are quite liked in Scotland. For example, there are several men and boys called 'Struan', which means 'stream' in Gaelic.

For Agnes, avoiding the 's', what about Agnetha (and various spellings)?

I expect you've seen this website. If not, it has hundreds and hundreds of Nordic names:

Ditto this for Scottish names: www.behindthename.com/names/usage/scottish

Ingrid? Ds was going to be an Ingrid. I like Tor.

Arkady · 10/01/2014 20:53

Tor can also be a sloaney girls name (short for Victoria). I've met a few.

Astrid?

moas · 11/01/2014 09:53

Cheers for your suggestions!
Great to hear of the gaelic word 'torr', I had no idea! Like it!
I absolutely love Ingrid but my mums nasty stepmother was called that, unfortuneately. Astrid is nice, was also thinking of Sigrid.
Ragnar is a pal of mine, so not sure about that. Lovely strong name though!

'Tor' is also a little hill/outcrop in English.

CruCru · 11/01/2014 12:07

I love Helga.

redsquareyellowsquare · 11/01/2014 12:14

not relevant but I LOVE Axel!

HomeHypno · 11/01/2014 12:24

I love Maud for a girl, it works in both languages.

How about Bjorn for a boy? It may not be such an easy one but it is such a cool name.

HyvaPaiva · 11/01/2014 12:32

Marit for a girl
Gunnar for a boy

mintberry · 11/01/2014 12:47

Helga is fine.

Be aware that Tor has these connotations.

lljkk · 11/01/2014 13:13

We know a Tor short for Victoria.

florascotia · 11/01/2014 13:22

There is also 'Torin'. It's Scottish, but with Viking origins (ie Thor, god of Thunder).

moas · 11/01/2014 20:27

Thanks for Torin, florascotia! I recently discovered this name too and like it.
And mintberry, thanks, yes, I've seen this.
Maud is a great suggestion that I have not thought of before, family friend though....
Marit yes. Gunnar is nice, in fact if it is a girl her second name will have to begin with Gun- since it's a bit of a family tradition. Thinking Gunhild or Gunnie for that.

I only knew one Helga (German) & can't imagine a little Helga? But as she was little once & a very cute little girl, why couldn't it be a great name?

Not too keen on Tor though

Winterwobbles · 13/01/2014 22:19

Really like Tor, we considered it if DD had been a boy

hackneybird · 13/01/2014 22:24

My initial reaction on seeing the thread title was 'no', but having seen you're Scandinavian and Scottish then I think they are lovely.

HRHQueenMe · 14/01/2014 10:09

Magnus and Saga, i know you dont want an S name but Saga is so pretty!
Lycka till!!
Tindra is another favourite, it means sparkle in swedish.

HRHQueenMe · 14/01/2014 10:10

Or Twinkle really...have neen in the UK too long now!

fuzzyduck234 · 14/01/2014 10:15

Love the name Tor but who have thought it was short for Victoria!

hawkmcqueen · 15/01/2014 08:37

I really like all the names being suggested and I know this isn't what you asked but I have known a Helga since I was a child and although she is lovely I have always found it to be an unattractive, clunky name which isn't nice when I say it. Just sharing that thought!

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/01/2014 21:44

Not Helga. It doesn't translate well in the UK I don't think.

Tor on the other hand is rather nice.

0hana · 16/01/2014 11:13

fuzzyduck234 I'm a Tor short for Victoria :) Sometimes Tori. My brother couldn't say Victoria when he was younger, only Tor.
