I don't really post here as my dcs are 8 and 6, however my dd said a new girl joined her Brownie pack last night called 'Ottilie'.

I've never heard the name before so looked it up. It's of German origin, meaning 'rich'. I really like it. I thought it may be of use as an idea for someone looking for a girls name.

It is quite popular on MN. I prefer 'Ottilia', as it retains the German pronunciation in English.

UriGeller · 09/01/2014 10:20

I really like it, I thought it sounded French though. Like Odile and Odette

madamecake · 09/01/2014 10:22

I really like it. A friend's dd has this as her middle name.

SicknSpan · 09/01/2014 10:41

Very pretty. Like that a lot, it's going on my list! Thanks harryhausen.

OhCaptainDarling · 09/01/2014 10:45

Very sweet name, I know 1 born last year.

HyvaPaiva · 09/01/2014 10:48

Ottilie is a lovely name.

harryhausen · 09/01/2014 12:31

Sorry, I'd never heard it before let alone seen in on MN. I almost wish I'd heard it when naming my ddGrin

It's a bit ottery for me. I like otters but wouldn't name a child after one.

SofaKing · 09/01/2014 12:44

There is a beautiful John Wyndham story about a man who is pushed into an alternative reality where he is married to an Ottilie Harshom. He is pushed back to his own reality one day, and desperately tries to find her. It is called Random Quest and is a wonderful love story.

I've liked the name Ottilie ever since reading that.

volvocowgirl · 09/01/2014 12:47

My dad wanted to call me Ottilie when I was born (after a Joan Collins film character I think). It's a pretty name (and one we considered for our soon to be born LO).

My mum wouldn't have it though. And I was given a popular 70s name which although I do like, especially because I know its meaning, I have been told by more than one person is a bit "council estate" - whatever that means!!! Hmm

volvocowgirl · 09/01/2014 12:49

I think the story SofaKing refers to is what the film Joan Collins was in was based on Smile

Tibby2 · 09/01/2014 17:11

Gorgeous name

sleepingbeautiful · 09/01/2014 17:16

I like it. We had a great gran called Ottelyn too, which is similar and more unusual.

MoonHare · 09/01/2014 17:24

I had never heard of this name until about 3 years ago when I overheard a woman telling someone that it was the name of her newborn. I heard it as "Otterly" and couldn't understand why on earth anyone would name their child such a thing! Thanks to MN I have been educated. However, I still don't like it, as someone else has said it's just too reminiscent of otters.

Dollydaydream99 · 09/01/2014 18:40

How is it pronounced, is it "oterrly"?

OhCaptainDarling · 09/01/2014 19:06

Pronunciation:OTT eh lee

PassthePercyPigs · 09/01/2014 20:55

My 3-yr-old DD is called Ottilie and my DH and I still absolutely adore it. she loves it too, and insists on being called by her full name rather than her nickname Ottie. I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my second child and have really struggled to come up with another girl's name that makes my heart sing the way 'Ottilie' does!

OhCaptainDarling · 09/01/2014 21:30

pass what about Athena?

Lebkuchenlover · 09/01/2014 22:40

Lovely name but I too prefer the Ottilia pronunciation, with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable.

CarlaVeloso · 10/01/2014 00:40

I always want to say Otterly Butterly. Sorry.

MairzyDoats · 10/01/2014 00:42

It's a bit too 'rah' for me.

gruffalosfriend · 10/01/2014 14:52

Really like Ottilie - it's classic, feminine and not overused.

TheRetroOwl · 10/01/2014 18:40

We had Ottilie on our list, but went for Corliss instead for our daughter. Other names we had were:

Waverley
Coral
Astrid
Fenella

I could still be tempted to bust Ottilie out for another baby girl. We quite like unusual names! Our surname has a VERY close connection to otters though, so it would probably be a bit too much all together. My DP still goes on that if we had a boy, he'd just like to call him Otter. I've told him no. Obviously.

pookamoo · 10/01/2014 18:44

Outing myself, but I have a 2yo with that name. We love it and so does she!

We chose it from a name book, totally randomly, because we both liked it and because we didn't know and had never heard of anyone else with that name.

Bizarrely, it seems to have become fashionable, which has really made me wonder how "trends" for these things are set.

BelleateSebastian · 10/01/2014 18:47

I read a really sad book where the main character was a little girl called Ottilie (No child of mine' by Susan Lewis)
