Atticus & Luna.
But they all telegraph a huge amount about the parents, whether you want that or not I don't know.

CarryOnDancing · 06/01/2014 18:09

It's great to see a list that doesn't just have top 100 name on!
I think there's a difference between personal taste and names being unusable.

The only ones I wouldn't use, simply because of subjective taste are: Paisley (don't like the pattern style). Ember (think fires) , Loki (like the sound but not connection).

I can't see any reason not to use any of the others. I see Dexter as being mainstream now as I know of a few so that might not be what you are after?

My favourites are Atticus (I don't see this as "try hard", just a different style) and Indigo (much nicer than India which I think is overused now).

Good luck choosing!

Starsandcars · 06/01/2014 18:22

Atticus is certainly the stand out name on your boys list

ToffeeJungle · 06/01/2014 18:45

I don't think I would have the

ToffeeJungle · 06/01/2014 18:47
  • guts to use any of them personally though I do like all the boys names particularly Atticus and Chester. Not keen on any of the girls names though if I had to pick Id go for Indigo.
Nerfmother · 06/01/2014 18:57

atticus okay, bit pseudo posh but if that doesn't bother you it's nice
dexter, bit common but again nice if that doesn't bother you
loki, sounds dreadful when you say it out loud - practise shrieking it across a playground?
axel, def common sounding, would assume you liked guns and roses
chester, okay, quite nice, best of them all but not wow.
luna , why call your daughter after the moon? Stella is much nicer (star) or Estella?
paisley, No - Paige?
ember, weird. the dying embers of the fire. Not exactly new beginnings!
indigo, try hard
, astala no, ever since peaches everyone will think its a boys name and you've got it wrong.

YoMamma · 06/01/2014 19:00

I like Chester, Dexter and Luna but not keen on any of the others.

NadiaWadia · 07/01/2014 16:48

You can't call a child Paisley, for goodness sake, a lot of people will immediately think of the Reverend Ian Paisley, (bigoted Northern Ireland politician) who was fairly awful IIRC.

Or am I just showing my age now?

notso · 07/01/2014 16:57

Your showing your age, I thought of a character from ANT Farm on Disney Channel Blush

NadiaWadia · 07/01/2014 20:44

Is this character human, notso?

I would think of 1. Ian Paisley as mentioned 2. small town near Glasgow 3. paisley pattern. I wouldn't really think of it as a child's first name.

WhenWhyWhere · 07/01/2014 21:05

atticus. Very trendy but nice
dexter. Trendy but ok
loki. Trendy but nice
axel. Ok
chester Ok

luna. Trendy but nice
paisley. Ok but not great
ember. Doesn't sound like a name.

indigo. Nope
astala. Nope

Overall I think they are all solid names. I don't find them too unusual at all. I like the fact they are all straightforward spellings and not hard to say. Apart from Loki - is it Lockee or LowKey??

notso · 08/01/2014 08:11

Yes Nadia she is a 'dumb', pretty, blonde cheerleader type girl.
I thought of her first because DS1 seems to have the annoying show on a lot.
Then I thought of Paisley pattern which I hate, then of one of my infants teacher from Paisley who first told me about the pattern.

Ian Paisley didn't cross my mind until you mentioned him, even though I am fully aware of who he is.

redrubyindigo · 08/01/2014 19:17

Luna. I think of Lunatic. Sorry.

Indigo is pretty but prefer India.

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 08/01/2014 19:19

I love Luna and Indigo. My friend has an Indigo and we all call her Indi.

FrancesFarmer · 08/01/2014 19:31

Atticus: ok, but slightly pretentious, if that bothers you.
Dexter: will date quickly and do you really want to name a child after a serial killer character?
Loki: he's not the nicest of characters in Norse mythology.

Axel: ridiculous due to rock star connotations.
Chester: all I can think of is the rhyming slang Charlie Chester, child molester.

Luna: not keen as it suggests a ditzy wisp of a child. Also, a Harry Potter character - best avoided.
Paisley: Not great - would remind me of Ian Paisley, N. Ireland politician or of the pattern, which looks like semen under a microscope.
Ember: not the worst.
Indigo: would remind one of the indigo child cliché.
Astala: it's a celebrity baby name so I would avoid.

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 08/01/2014 19:53

I've never heard the expression indigo child?? Off to google.....

redrubyindigo · 08/01/2014 20:07

Lastnightopenedmyeyes

Stay away from Google and Indigo Child! I met a 'self proclaimed' Indigo chadult the other day. Oh my dear GOD!!!

UriGeller · 08/01/2014 20:18

When she walks into a room I walk out as do most people. I can't even begin to describe the sheer toe curlingingly awfulness of this person.

mamachelle · 08/01/2014 21:00
