Is it odd to name a baby after a ship?

My father sailed on HMS Ariadne when he first joined the navy and it's also a Greek mythological name. I think it's sweet but is it odd to name a baby after a ship? The nn would be Aria not Ari as already have Remy and (no offence to anyone) I can't stand rhyming sibling names. Does it go with the middle name Ivy? Any other suggestions for siblings Violet Rose Ann and Remy Quill Brian? Thanks :) xxx

In this case I would say no, not odd because of the connection.

If it were a random boat you'd just seen in passing one day then it would be, Possibly, odd.

I think the name and the connection are lovely. It's not like you would be calling her Titanic!

Well its a girls name too. Not like hms unicorn, or kinpurnie.

Love Ariadne, but Aria as a nn is never going to stick (it's practically as long and doesn't roll off the tongue as a diminutive should). So either call her Aria, or leave it as Ariadne and accept that she will be Ari.... I assume the other one is Vi or Lettie, so Ari doesn't matchy-matchy chi chi anyway.

(Yes, I have three kids whose (full) names accidentally end on a similar but spelt completely differently sound...)

Remy, Violet and Ariadne fine. (Rem, Vi (hee hee, I know she's a Lettie) and Ari fine)

Ariadne is a lovely name, it's a proper girls name as well as being the ship's name.

I've taught an Ariadne, it's a lovely name much better than Cutty Sark

Don't much like Ariadne Ivy so much though, I think because the endings sound similar.

Ariadne is fine, as others have said if it were dauntless, or illustrious or ark royal, then that's just daft. But Ariadne is a lovely name.

I wouldn't try to force a NN though. Ariadne is a beautiful name, use it. Nn are usually a naturally occurring thing.

The ship has taken a baby name not like you'll be calling it "dinghy", "sloop" or "life raft" is it?

Its not like you are naming them HMS Belfast.

You are using an existing name for a person. So cannot see an issue.

The only thing to consider with the name and it's lovely, is it's the name of one of the main characters in the BBC drama Atlantis. That's the most likely link people will make.

Not weird, I thought you might be suggesting Marie Celeste! (Which actually sounds great as a girls name but hopefully she'd be a bit more popular ).

Really like it. Agree with previous poster that you can't force a nn but Ria might be an option if you don't mind Ria and Remy. Actually, the Remy I know is a Rem!

Ariadne is a proper name first, and a lovely one.

An ancestor of mine was born en route to New Zealand and was named after the ship - Piako (middle name) which I think is great. Obviously not if it had been Ark Royal or something.

When I saw this I thought the ship might be HMS Illustrious or something equally boat like. Ariadne is lovely wither without the boat connection, so I'd just go for it. As for the nn in my experience the children's friends tend to determine this regardless of what the parents wishes are

I think Bismark is a great name for a child!
