Too different?

Have recently come across the name 'Nova', was delighted to find its a pretty old name (I like olden names) that has disappeared pretty much off radar since early 1900's.

I like that its meaning is 'new' and that a Nova is a star that suddenly shines much brighter than usual, I just like that whole image, combined with the name.

Thoughts on the name? Smile

Been on my list for ages. Never heard of a Vauxhall Nova though (until now) so that doesn't bother me. Mercedes is a name for a person and a car, there's no difference!

BackforGood · 30/12/2013 14:57

Personally, I just think it's not nice to bestow a name on a child that they have to explain every single time they meet someone new.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 30/12/2013 16:32

Backforgood, it's a circular argument. If people only ever choose common / classic / popular names anything remotely unique will need explanation.

If parents had more confidence and dared to venture outside the top 100 now and then explanations would not be required and teasing would be less prevalent.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 30/12/2013 16:36

Id wonder if she was conceived in the back of a Nova,or in Nova Scotia.

Even without the links above,.I just dont think it sounds nice.... No Va.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2013 20:32

Now op, I thought we agreed on that other thread that Genevieve was an excellent name? Grin

LCHammer · 30/12/2013 20:36

I like it.

secretsofsanta · 30/12/2013 20:39

What about seren or stella?

StrawberryMojito · 30/12/2013 20:39

It's fine. Not my cup of tea but not atrocious by any means.

Yika · 30/12/2013 20:40

I like it and would never make the car connection.

picnicbasketcase · 30/12/2013 20:54

I knew an Astra, and she got a lot of jokes about her place of conception. Would imagine a Nova would too.

mojo1981 · 30/12/2013 22:35

If you like it use it, ive done a similar post on here about a name i like and have decided that (although you would think it would be the perfect place) mumsnet is not the place to ask opinions on names that are not "common" "Real" (whatever that is) Yes its a name of a car but then so is Adam (recently brought out by vauxhall)

I wouldnt take any notice of the negative comments on here as they are probably people who have kids with boring names who are one of 10 in thier class. (yeah im a bit bitter from my mumsnet experience)

And as for people suggesting names that are nothing like "nova" absolutely bloody pointless.....in which case you may as well call her "Dave".

I agree with TransatlanticCityGirl!!! People need to be more confident when choosing their names!

Nova....Go for it!

Love it.

Layl77 · 30/12/2013 22:54

I like it!

Worriedthistimearound · 31/12/2013 09:37

Mojo1981, I don't know why you're bitter! I read your thread and you got lots of positive responses. The fact that some posters said they didn't like it is just what happens when you ask for opinions. Also, at the end of your thread you seemed to misunderstand and think a certain poster was saying you couldn't spell when they were discussing the girl in the class whose name was a blatant misspelt version if a common name. But no, if you want everyone to agree and say its lovely, don't post on MN asking for opinions.

Op, I think if you like it you should go with it. You have thought about it and you like the meaning. I don't think children if her generation will have any concept of the car.
It's not my cup if tea but then im a fussy bugger who doesnt like any short names that can't be shortened so that rules out a lot for me straight away. If a Nova appeared in my class, I'd think that's unusual and pretty. Go for it if you love it!

Florrieboo · 01/01/2014 12:47

It's a radio station here in Oz. That puts me off a little because of how they say it in the jingle for it.

monkeymax58 · 01/01/2014 12:50

Avon backwards finished it off for me.........Smile

Prefer Luna.

clara26 · 01/01/2014 13:08

It's a pretty name. If you like it go for it. My initial thought was supernova rather than a car. I doubt children her age would know what a nova is.

biffnbuster · 01/01/2014 13:11

Monkeymax58 butt that's Anul ....

diddl · 01/01/2014 15:48

I like it.
Got an Aunty called it, so doesn't strike me as odd.

Islenka · 01/01/2014 16:18

My friwnd's DD is called Lana.

Thanks to you, buster , I decided to figure out what it means backwards...

RaRa1988 · 01/01/2014 16:39

I've never heard of it before, but I think it sounds really pretty Smile. To hell with the Nova car - does it even exist any more?! Not a connotation I would have, and I doubt I could even identify a Nova. Not like you're calling her Vauxhall!

MaeveBehave · 01/01/2014 16:41

Mi nuevo nova no va
Boom boom

thepobblewhohasnotoes · 01/01/2014 16:44

I love unusual names. DS has a very unusual name, DD has a more common one, but still fairly unusual outside of Wales. We considered both Nova and Astra for DD, both are great names but sadly ruined by the car association.
For me at least, that rules it put, it'd be unfair I think.

bootsycollins · 01/01/2014 16:46

I have a friend who has a friend called Nova. I think it's gorgeous, makes me think of a dark haired fringed beauty from Russia (no idea why, just me being weird).
