Liking the name Magnus, and idly wondering what nicknames come from it...

Max, I suppose? Mags? You could get away with Manny or Magnie?

BearsInMotion · 29/12/2013 17:17

Mags was the usual for my school friend!

OatcakeCravings · 29/12/2013 17:18

Magnie is the usual NN for Magnus where I'm from.

HyvaPaiva · 29/12/2013 17:24

Depends how you're pronouncing it. I'm Scottish, here it's Mag-nis. But I know a Norwegian Mah-Nus and a Danish Mau-nus. 'Mags' is the nickname where I come from and it's 'Mau' for the other guys I've mentioned.

Gus

Thanks. I guess it's not compulsory that it gets shortened. It's one of the few names DH and I can agree on for DS4 (due in about a week Shock)

My Magnus (age 3 ) has never had a nickname as of yet, except at school where the kids think he's called Magnet...:)

MonkeysTypewriter · 29/12/2013 19:16

Gorgeous name. You don't need to shorten it. At school he could be called anything, most of my friends with nicknames are unrelated to their actual name or relate to surnames.

Northumberlandlass · 29/12/2013 19:19

I know a Magnus & he gets 'Mag'

Sleepthief · 29/12/2013 19:47

Grin at Magnet

Maggie, Mags, Mag, just Magnus

willowstar · 29/12/2013 19:58

My beautiful Magnus occasionally gets shortened to Mags. My husband calls him Magna a lot. I pretty much always call him Magnus. He is only just about 2 though, not sure what will happen when he is older

I love his name. It is simple yet unusual where we live and is a nod to my Scottish heritage while also being a cool Scandinavia name too. Love it and the older he gets the more I like it.

Sleepthief · 30/12/2013 11:57

Thanks all. I think after months of disagreement and Mexican stand-off we may have a winner Grin

Which is a good thing as I'm fairly certain I'm in early labour Shock. Although if DS3 is anything to go by, this could last for days Hmm

C'mon baby Magnus!

Magnus is fantastic. We are in Germany and my dd has a classmate age 10 called Magnus - pronounced Mag-noos, he's an awesome kid.

Sweetishdelight · 31/12/2013 16:03

My Magnus has always been Mags in the family but his friends have always called him Maggie

Sleepthief · 31/12/2013 18:51

Loving the overwhelmingly positive responses Grin

Gussie! One of the best characters in the Jeeves and Wooster books.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 31/12/2013 20:07

My dh says "ultra" as its a transformer apparently. Grin
I would go for gus or just wait and see, my ds's nickname is nothing like his name and he has had a few different ones and he's only 6 months.

DigOfTheChristmasTreeStump · 01/01/2014 23:01

Magnus is a magnificent name. Good luck with the labour.

CarryOnDancing · 02/01/2014 11:50

Has he arrived yet? I hope all is going well!!

DH suggested Magnus yesterday, out of interest is it seen as Scottish?

AgathaPinchBottom · 02/01/2014 12:35

Magpie?! Congratulations

florascotia · 04/01/2014 13:05

CarryOn - yes, it's Scottish but also Viking. Especially associated with Orkney. There is St Magnus's Cathedral there. Here is his story:
