Francesca-must I have an Italian surname?

I love this name think it is beautiful and timeless. People I have mentioned it to agree but their only negative is that they feel it is just so synonymous with Italy/italian sounding that they expect italian parentage/heritage or surname.
What do you think please?

I personally don't think so but would like a few more opinions x

Francesca is a beautiful name and is used by many non - Italians.

Francesca is well-established in the UK.

I don't think most people would necessarily expect 'Francesca' to have Italian heritage, in the same way as you wouldn't necessarily expect 'Natasha' to be Russian or 'Amelie' to be French.

No, I think it's fine. Use it!

I have known several Francesca's not a single one with a Italian or even remotely sounding Italian surname (1 called Smith and 1 Jones for example)

If you like it use it. Unless your surname is Francesca then perhaps Francsca Francesca is a bit much Xmas Smile

I know 6 young Francescas - none of them are Italian. It's a lovely name. Most of them go by the nn Frankie (one is known as Frannie). Personally I'm not so keen on its potential nn's - it seems a shame to shorten such a beautiful name!

With the new pope lots of Catholic baby girls are Francesca now, it is a beautiful name :)

Onesleeptillwembley · 27/12/2013 15:28

The one I know is mid 40's called Chessie.

Weareboatsremember · 27/12/2013 15:50

We call our Francesca 'chess' or 'cheska' (said phoneyically) I think it's a lovely name (biased) and we don't have an Italian surname.

lljkk · 27/12/2013 16:00

I think of it as a Portuguese name. Use it if you love it.

Frikadellen · 27/12/2013 16:15

The Francesca we are the " closest too" (child of one of our friends) is known as "Chessie"

LoreleisSecret · 27/12/2013 16:21

Francesca is my name and I do not have an Italian Surname Smile
